Titans Swept In NCAA Tournament Opener

The UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team ended its sixth straight NCAA Division III postseason appearance with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-11 opening round loss to Carthage College on Friday (Nov. 12) in Kenosha.

UW-Oshkosh, (24-14) which received an at large bid to the 63-team NCAA Division III Championship, ended the season with eight straight losses, seven of which were to teams ranked in the top-25 in the nation.

The Titans, who captured their third straight WIAC title earlier in the year, was led by the 16 kills of Aleisha Bagin (So. • West Bend).

Morgan Liebetrau (So. • West Bend) dished out 23 assists and had seven digs, Anna Ruhland (Fr. • Mazomanie) tallied nine digs and Robin Eggert (Fr. • Woodridge, Ill.), Andrea Felton (So. • New Berlin) Andrea Smith (Sr. • Fond du Lac) had eight digs each.

UW-Oshkosh, a semifinalist team at last year's NCAA Division III Championship, entered the match as the 22nd-ranked team in the country by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Carthage College was ranked seventh.

Carthage College was led by Michelle Madeja who had 12 kills with a .435 hitting percentage. Cindy Cavanagh added nine kills, Jordan Burkholder seven kills and seven blocks and Drewann Pancratz handed out 26 assists.

With 24 victories this season, UW-Oshkosh has now won 20-plus matches for 12 consecutive years and is the owner of 18 seasons of 30 or more wins and seven years of 40 or more victories.

The loss concludes the career of Smith and Christina Cahoon (Sr. • Watertown). The duo racked up an impressive 135-26 overall record in a Titans uniform, won three WIAC championships and advanced to four NCAA Division III postseason tournaments. The pair was also instrumental in UW-Oshkosh's trips to the Elite Eight in 2008 and 2009.

In the other quarterfinal matches, Wartburg College (Iowa) swept UW-Whitewater, 3-0, with winning set scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-17; Washington University (Mo.) swept Beloit College, 3-0, with winning scores of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-11; and UW-Platteville shut out Dominican University (Ill.), 3-0, with winning scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-16. Carthage will play UW-Platteville on Saturday (Nov. 13) in a 7 p.m. regional-semifinal match, with Wartburg College taking on Washington University at 4:30 p.m. The Sunday, Nov.14 regional-championship match gets underway at 4 p.m.
