Titans Receive At-Large Bid To NCAA Championship

The UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team received its sixth straight invitation to the NCAA Division III Championship on Monday (Nov. 8). A total of 63 teams were selected to this year's tournament, including defending national champion Washington University (Mo.).

UW-Oshkosh was placed in the eight-team Kenosha (Wis.) Regional and the Titans (24-13) will face host Carthage College (30-7) at 8 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 12) in Tarble Arena.

UW-Oshkosh is making its 15th (1990-91, 1993-97, 2000-01, 2005-10) NCAA Division III postseason tournament appearance. The Titans shared the WIAC's regular season championship with UW-Eau Claire and finished fourth in the league's postseason tournament. UW-Oshkosh finished third in last year's NCAA Division III Championship and has an all-time NCAA postseason record of 24-16.

The single-elimination Kenosha Regional features seven matches, with four scheduled for Friday (Nov. 12), two for Saturday (Nov. 13) and one for Sunday (Nov. 14). The winner of the Kenosha Regional joins seven other regional champions in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Championship on Nov. 19 in St. Louis, Mo.

Competition in the Kenosha Regional begins with UW-Whitewater (28-8) playing Wartburg College (Iowa) (23-15) at 12:30 p.m. That contest will be followed by a 3 p.m. match between Washington University (31-3) and Beloit College (19-11) and a 5:30 p.m. game between UW-Platteville (31-3) and Dominican University (Ill.) (26-9).

Beloit College defeated St. Norbert College to capture the Midwest Conference Tournament and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. The Buccaneers are 19-11 and ended the regular season with five-straight victories after sharing the regular season conference title with Monmouth College (Ill.). Beloit College lost its only other NCAA match in 2006.

Carthage College won the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin with a sweep of Wheaton College (Ill.) to punch their automatic ticket to the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Reds went 9-1 in conference play to finish second to Millikin University (Ill.) and are riding a 12-match winning streak. Carthage College competes in its seventh NCAA Tournament (1990, 2005-2010) and is 6-6 in its previous NCAA outings.

Dominican University qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history, defeating Benedictine University (Ill.) in the Northern Athletic Conference (NAC) Championship. The Stars finished with a 10-2 mark in the NAC to place second to Concordia University Wisconsin in the league standings.

UW-Platteville won the WIAC tournament over UW-Eau Claire to capture an automatic berth into the Championships. The Pioneers enter postseason play on a 19-match winning streak. UW-Platteville is playing in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in school annals (1983, 1992, 1997, 2005, 2007, 2009-10) and the third time over the past four seasons. The Pioneers enter the Championship with a 2-6 record in their previous six appearances.

UW-Whitewater is making its 19th straight and 23rd overall (1986-89, 1992-2010) NCAA Division III regional tournament appearance after receiving an at large bid. The Warhawks finished third in both the WIAC regular season and in the WIAC tournament. UW-Whitewater won NCAA Division III titles in 2002 and 2005 and finished second in the national tournament in 2000, 2001 and 2007. The Warhawks are 42-21 overall in national tournament play.

Wartburg College upset top-seeded Loras College (Iowa) to claim the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) title and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Knights, who entered the IIAC tournament as the third-seed after going 5-3 in the regular season, came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Duhawks. Wartburg College, who has a 4-5 record in the NCAA Tournament, competes in their six NCAA Division III Championship (1997-98, 2001-03, 2010) and first since the 2003 season.

Washington University has won a NCAA Division III record 10 national championship, including the 2009 title with a 3-1 win over Juniata College (Pa.). The Bears are appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the 24th-consecutive season and are 85-14 all-time in NCAA play. Washington University received an at-large berth to this year's tournament as the runner-up in the University of Athletic Association (UAA) after suffering a 3-1 loss to Emory University.

Five of the eight teams competing in the Carthage Regional are ranked nationally by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Washington University is ranked third, Carthage College seventh, UW-Platteville 14th, UW-Whitewater 16th and UW-Oshkosh 22rd.
