Titans Claim 14th WIAC Regular Season Title

LA CROSSE, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team claimed sole possession of the 2023 WIAC regular season title with a sweep of UW-La Crosse in Mitchell Hall on Friday night (Nov. 3).

The Titans won in sets of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-20.

UW-Oshkosh won its 13th regular season title in program history. The Titans last earned the distinction in 2016 when they shared the league crown with UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater. Their last solo conference title was won by the 2009 team, whose win streak they recently broke with a sweep of Alverno College on Wednesday (Oct. 31).

UW-Oshkosh recorded a .223 hitting percentage with 44 kills on 112 total attacks and held the Eagles to just .059 hitting (25 kills on 101 attacks). Oshkosh also held the advantage in assists (41-24) and digs (52-39).

Sami Perlberg (Fr. • Chippewa Falls) led the Titans with 15 kills, hitting .333 on 33 total attacks. Kalli Mau (Sr. • Kimberly) and Izzy Coon (So. • Fond du Lac) each had double-digit assists with 22 and 17, respectively. Leading the team with 19 digs was Abby Fregien (Jr. • Waukesha).

Sami Perlberg scored the first point of the match with a kill, before the Eagles outscored the Titans 7-1 to force a timeout. After the timeout, Oshkosh went on a tear and recorded multiple runs of three or more points to claim the set.

The second set remained close through a 9-9 tie. Robyn Kirsch (Jr. • Wausau) kicked off a seven-point spurt with her fifth kill of the match. An Eagle kill made the score 15-10 before Oshkosh outscored La Crosse 10-7 the rest of the set.

The Titans led by as much as three points early in the third set, however the Eagles kept it close and even took the lead at 10-9. The set tied up three times before a La Crosse attack error started a six-point Oshkosh run that ended the set and match.

The Titans head to Madison on Saturday (Nov. 4), finishing the regular season at the Edgewood College Triangular #2. They will face Edgewood at 2 p.m. and Wheaton College (Ill.) at 4 p.m.

Oshkosh will host the winner of the No. 5 vs. No. 4 match at Kolf Sports Center Thursday (Nov. 9) at 7 p.m. in the semifinal round of the WIAC Tournament.
