Titans Headed to NCAA Tournament

OSHKOSH, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh Titans volleyball team is headed to the NCAA Division III national tournament for the 18th time in program history.

The Titans will be the No. 4 seed in their region. They finished the regular season with a 30-5 (6-1 WIAC) record, winning their last 19 matches. They advanced to the WIAC tournament semifinals before falling to UW-Stevens Point in five sets. The Pointers lost to UW-Whitewater in the finals, 1-3.

They will face the fifth-seeded 23-5 (8-1 OAC) Otterbein Cardinals (Ohio) in the first round of the national tournament, at Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. at 4:30 p.m. CST. The Titans' region is hosted by Calvin University (Mich.). The Cardinals won the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament, beating Marietta College (Ohio) 3-1 in the second round after receiving a first-round bye, and John Carroll University (Ohio) 3-0 in the finals.

Titan Leaders

Oshkosh leads the nation in team assists (1,541) and team digs (2,461) as well as being ranked second in the nation in team kills with 1,684 and third in total attacks with 5,033. Abby Fregien ranks third in the nation with 696 total digs, and first in the WIAC with 5.31 digs per set. Amelia Hust's 60 aces ranks second in the conference. Carissa Sundholm has 455 total kills, good for second in the league.

Cardinal Leaders

The Cardinals lead the OAC in assists per set (12.46), hitting percentage (.237), kills per set (13.48), team assists (1,258) and team kills (1,361). Amber Greeley leads the conference with a .381 hitting percentage. Morgan Hartman leads with 3.69 kills per set. Carlie Craycraft holds the top spot in the conference with 955 total assists.

Other WIAC Teams in Tournament

Three other WIAC teams will compete in the national tournament, all facing their first-round opponents at Ericksen Center in St. Paul, Minn.

UW-Stevens Point will face Coe College (Iowa), UW-Eau Claire, the defending national champions will face Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), and UW-Whitewater will face Cornell College (Iowa).

All-WIAC Awards

Sophomore Abby Fregien won the WIAC Kwik Trip Defensive Player of the Year award, and head coach Jon Ellmann won the WIAC Kwik Trip Coach of the Year award for the 2022 season. Sophomore Riley Kindt and junior Carissa Sundholm each took home All-WIAC honors, Fregien also earned Honorable Mention and All-Defensive Team awards, and Kate Nottoli was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.
