UWO Routs Nationally Ranked Augsburg

STEVENS POINT, Wis.–The UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team hit .315 on the way to trouncing nationally ranked Augsburg University (Minn.), 3-0, on Saturday (Oct. 1) in Berg Gym on the campus of UW-Stevens Point.

UW-Oshkosh (18-4), which extended its winning streak to seven matches, swept Augsburg handily in set scores of 25-19, 25-14, 25-16. Augsburg (13-2), which had its 11-match winning streak halted, went into the day ranked 16th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll.

The Titans downed a nationally ranked team for the second time in as many days after knocking off 13th-ranked UW-Stevens Point, 3-1, on Friday (Sept. 30) in Berg Gym. Saturday's UW-Oshkosh win snaps a two-match losing skid to the Auggies, including a 3-1 setback last season in Eau Claire, and represented the program's first victory over Augsburg since a 3-0 decision in 2002.

UW-Oshkosh produced its second-best hitting performance of the season – trailing only its .328 rate during a 3-1 win over Denison University (Ohio) on Sept. 17 – en route to collecting 48 kills against Augsburg.

Riley Kindt had a team-leading 12 kills for the Titans, who also received 11 terminations apiece from Riley Dahlquist and Carissa Sundholm, and seven kills from Hannah Moe. Dahlquist, whose five service aces were one shy of tying a season high, hit .733 on 15 errorless swings while Kindt hit .556, Moe .385 and Sundholm .200.

Izzy Coon and Kalli Mau dished out 21 and 18 assists, respectively, while co-directing the highly efficient Titans offense. Abby Fregien once again paced the UW-Oshkosh backrow defense with a match-high 19 digs.

UW-Oshkosh concluded the match with considerable advantages of 48-29 in kills. .315 to .155 in hitting percentage, 51-38 in digs and 7-2 in service aces. Augsburg held a 7-4 edge in blocks.

The Titans entered the weekend as the Division III leaders in total kills and total digs while ranking third nationally in total blocks. Fregien was second in the country in total digs heading into the weekend, and Kindt and Sundholm were 11th in the nation in total blocks and total kills, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh broke open a close opening set with six consecutive points to end the frame. Tied at 19, the Titans got back-to-back kills by Dahlquist and Brooke Porter for a 21-19 advantage. Following an Auggies attack error, Kindt and Moe combined for a block, and Kindt capped the six-point run with a pair of kills.

The Titans seized control of the second set early, scoring four points in a row, including two on kills from Moe and Dahlquist, for an 8-3 cushion. Consecutive Augsburg attack errors extended the UW-Oshkosh cushion to 14-7, and Kindt later ended the frame again with a kill.

UW-Oshkosh then led each point of the third set, building advantages of 6-1 after four straight kills – two apiece by Dahlquist and Sundholm – 14-8 following a Moe termination, and 22-13 after the Auggies' 14th and final attack error. The Titans concluded the rout in style with three consecutive kills as Mau notched one and Dahlquist clinched the win with a pair of terminations.

Augsburg team leaders included Mikayla Coops with seven kills on 10 attempts to go along with 19 assists, Angel Vo with 17 digs, and Marie Venberg with four blocks.

UW-Oshkosh, which has played each of its last 11 matches away from home, hosts Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Oct. 5) in Kolf Sports Center.
