Titans Stun Ranked Pointers In Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis.–Reigning Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week Carissa Sundholm had 19 kills and 16 digs to lead the UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team to 3-1 upset victory at nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday (Sept. 30).

UW-Oshkosh (17-4, 2-1 WIAC) downed UW-Stevens Point (14-3, 1-2) in set scores of 16-25, 25-23, 29-27, 25-21. The Pointers, ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, had won nine consecutive home matches dating back to last season and 20 of their previous 21 contests in Berg Gym.

The Titans, who extended their winning streak to six matches, last defeated the Pointers during a regular season WIAC contest exactly 13 years ago on Sept. 30, 2009. UW-Oshkosh's most recent prior win over the Pointers in Stevens Point was a 3-0 decision during the first round of the 2017 WIAC Tournament. The Titans also eked by the Pointers, 3-2, last season in Oshkosh.

Sundholm produced 20 points Wednesday, committing just one attack error on 48 swings while adding a pair of blocks and one assists. The double-double is Sundholm's fifth this season and 13th career.

Olivia Breunig and Hannah Moe contributed eight kills apiece for UW-Oshkosh, which also received seven terminations from both Riley Kindt and Riley Dahlquist, 26 assists and two service aces from Kalli Mau, 23 assists and 13 digs from Izzy Coon, 10 digs and two aces from Amelia Hust. Kindt also had a team-leading five blocks. Coon now has five double-doubles this season.

UW-Oshkosh went into the match leading the division in kills and digs while ranking third nationally in blocks and pacing the conference in digs per set. Fregien, the WIAC leader in digs per set, was ranked second in the nation in total digs entering the night. Kindt and Sundholm were both 11th in the country in blocks and kills, respectively.

The Titans concluded the match with edges of 58-57 in kills and 77-75 in digs, UW-Stevens Point, which headed into the night leading the conference in kills per set, narrowly outhit UW-Oshkosh, .209 to .196, and held a 10-8 advantage in blocks. Both teams notched five service aces.

UW-Stevens Point's Ashley Kopp led all players with 22 kills to go along with 16 digs.

Grace Michalske dished out 41 assists for the Pointers, who also received 27 digs from Emma Peterson, 12 kills and five blocks from Sydney Mosinski and 11 terminations from Melanie Meyer.

Michalske is the Division III leader in total assists and ranks 10th nationally in assists per set. Kopp went into the match ranked second in the nation in kills, kills per set, points, and points per set.

After hitting just .088 and losing the opening set, UW-Oshkosh rebounded to outhit the Pointers during each of the final three frames en route to pulling off the upset. The Titans hit a robust .400 and pounded down 17 kills in Set 4.

UW-Oshkosh began its comeback by racing out to a 13-9 lead in Set 2 following a Robyn Kirsch kill. The Titans later extended their lead to 24-19 on a Sundholm kill, but UW-Stevens Point fended off four set-points to cut the deficit to 24-23. However, Moe answered with a termination on the ensuing point to knot the match at one set apiece.

Set 3 was tied for the 10th time at 24 after a Pointers attack error. Hust then delivered a service ace to provide the Titans set-point at 25-24, but UW-Stevens Point got back-to-back kills for a set-point of its own at 26-25. A Titans attack error gave the Pointers their third set-point at 27-26, but Sundholm and Dahlquist answered with kills for a 28-27 advantage. A double-block by Dahlquist and Sundholm then capped the set that featured 13 ties and nine lead changes.

UW-Oshkosh took the lead for good in the fourth set at 17-16 following a Moe kill. The Titans cushion ballooned to 20-16 after a double-block from Kindt and Brooke Porter, a Kindt kill and a Pointers ballhandling error extended the run to four straight points. Clinging to a 23-21 lead, the Titans put the finishing touches on the victory with consecutive kills from Sundholm and Moe.

The Titans travel back to Stevens Point to play nationally ranked Augsburg University (Minn.) on Saturday (Oct. 1) as part of the UW-Stevens Point Invitational. Augsburg (13-1), riding an 11-match winning streak, is 16th in the latest AVCA poll.
