Volleyball Sweeps Two Matches In Windy City

CHICAGO–The UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to five matches with 3-0 victories over Kean University (N.J.) and North Park University (Ill.) at the North Park Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 24).

UW-Oshkosh (16-4) went unbeaten in its four matches at the North Park Invitational after downing first-time opponent Kean in set scores of 25-15, 25-14, 25-13 and the tournament host in scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-20. The Titans improved to 5-0 against North Park since 1995, including a 3-0 sweep a year ago.

The Titans, who are receiving votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, have now won seven matches in 3-0 fashion on the year.

UW-Oshkosh made quick work of the Cougars, limiting Kean to just 22 kills and a .069 hitting percentage.

UW-Oshkosh's Hannah Moe led all players with 10 kills on 19 errorless swings for a .526 hitting percentage.

Robyn Kirsch added nine terminations for the Titans, who also received eight kills from Carissa Sundholm, eight kills on .438 hitting and a team-leading three blocks from Riley Kindt, and five kills and six service aces from Riley Dahlquist.

Izzy Coon registered 16 assists, 12 digs and four service aces while co-directing the UW-Oshkosh offense with Kalli Mau, who dished out 13 assists. The double-double was Coon's fourth this season.

Abby Fregien collected 14 digs for UW-Oshkosh. Fregien headed into the weekend ranked second in the country in total digs, and Kindt was fifth nationally in total blocks.

The Titans owned considerable advantages of 41-22 in kills, .224 to .069 in hitting percentage, 56-37 in digs and 10-1 in service aces. Both teams had five blocks.

UW-Oshkosh went into the weekend leading the division in total digs while ranking second nationally in total kills and total blocks.

The Titans went on runs of 8-0 and 5-0 on the way to building a 23-14 lead in the opening set that was capped by a Kirsch kill.

UW-Oshkosh then rattled off another eight consecutive points during the second set for a 12-6 lead before a string of seven unanswered points ballooned the cushion to 20-8. Back-to-back terminations by Sundholm and Moe closed out the frame.

The Titans did not trail again in the match after a 5-0 run that featured a pair of Dahlquist kills and two Coon service aces provided a 9-4 cushion in Set 3. UW-Oshkosh later secured the sweep following a Moe kill and a Dahlquist service ace on the final two points.

Morgan Hall paced Kean (6-7) with eight kills on 16 errorless attempts.

Mau and Coon co-piloted a diverse Titans offense that got 10 kills by Kindt, nine terminations from Sundholm and seven apiece by Kirsch and Moe. Mau finished the match with 17 assists and 14 digs while Coon had 13 assists. Mau now has a team-best eight double-doubles this year and 16 during her career.

Fregien and Sundholm scooped up 16 and 14 digs, respectively, for the Titans. Kindt recorded a pair of blocks. Dahlquist chipped in three kills, five digs and three service aces.

The Titans held advantages of 39-33 in kills, .210 to .112 in hitting percentage, 68-60 in digs and 6-5 in service aces. North Park, which had a 6-2 edge in blocks, went into its home invitational ranked 10th nationally in digs per set.

The Vikings' Adriana Rodriguez produced a match-high 14 kills on .156 hitting to go along with 11 digs. Rodriguez is the division leader in total kills, kills per set, total points and points per set.

North Park (12-4) leaders also included Christina Gatta with 25 assists and Carolina Aviles with 19 digs.

UW-Oshkosh never trailed during the first two sets, limiting the Viking to a .049 hitting percentage in the opening frame and producing a .324 hitting percentage of its own in the second.

North Park took its first lead of the match at 9-8 in the third set, but UW-Oshkosh erased a 19-17 deficit by closing out the contest with an 8-1 run. A Kirsch kill sparked the match-ending run, a Dahlquist service ace gave the Titans the lead for good at 20-19, and a Kindt termination clinched the sweep six points later.

UW-Oshkosh returns to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at 12th-ranked UW-Stevens Point on Friday (Sept. 30).
