Sundholm Has Career Day, UWO Wins Twice In Chicago

CHICAGO–Carissa Sundholm pounded down a career-high 29 kills, matched a career high with 18 digs and finished one block shy of tying a career high with three during the second contest of the day as the UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team won a pair of matches to open the North Park University Invitational on Friday (Sept. 23).

UW-Oshkosh (14-4) swept Baldwin Wallace University (Ohio), 3-0, in set scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-17 before outlasting University of Chicago, 3-2, in scores of 22-25, 25-16, 25-18, 22-25, 15-6. UW-Oshkosh, which is now 3-1 in five-set matches on the year, and Chicago (9-6) are both receiving votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll.

The Titans played Baldwin Wallace for the first time since a 3-2 setback to the Yellow Jackets in 2003. UW-Oshkosh defeated Chicago, 3-1, last season.

The Titans used a balanced offensive attack on the way to sweeping the Yellow Jackets. Sundholm had a team-leading 10 kills for UW-Oshkosh while Hannah Moe added eight terminations, and Riley Dahlquist and Riley Kindt chipped in seven apiece.

Dahlquist led the Titans net defense with five blocks. Abby Fregien and Amelia Hust collected 18 and 13 digs, respectively, in the UW-Oshkosh back row.

Izzy Coon dished out 15 assists and Kalli Mau distributed 14 for the Titans. Coon, Dahlquist, Fregien and Hust each accounted for two of UW-Oshkosh's nine aces. Fregien went into the day ranked second in the country in digs, and Kindt was second nationally in blocks.

UW-Oshkosh finished considerable advantages of 37-26 in kills, .214 to .064 in hitting percentage, 54-43 in digs, 9-2 in service aces and 6-3 in blocks. Baldwin Wallace committed 38 total errors in the contest.

The Titans trailed on just three points – at 1-0 in both the first set and at 1-0 and 2-1 during the third frame – the entire match. UW-Oshkosh capped the first set on a Moe kill, the second frame on an Olivia Breunig termination and the third with seven points in a row. The Titans' 7-0 run to end the match began with back-to-back Dahlquist kills, continued with a Baldwin Wallace error and a Moe termination, and culminated with three consecutive double-blocks as Dahlquist played a part in all three alongside Moe on two occasions and Sundholm once.

Baldwin Wallace got a match-best 11 kills from Sam Rueda, 22 assists from Olivia Zawadzki and 18 digs from Lauren Gardner.

The Titans snapped the Maroons' four-match winning streak on the strength of Sundholm's career day. Chicago's recent winning streak included a 3-0 win over fourth-ranked Emory University (Ga.) and a 3-2 victory over fifth-ranked Calvin University (Mich.).

Sundholm, whose pevious career best was 19 kills, produced 30.5 points in the match en route to finishing within three kills of tying the program record of 32 established by Jessie Goffard in 2001. Just six Titans have ever had more kills in a match than Sundholm did against Chicago. The double-double was Sundholm's fourth this year and 12th career.

Dahlquist contributed nine kills for a Titans offense that also received eight terminations from Moe, seven by Robyn Kirsch, six from Kindt and five by Maddy Pearson.

Mau had a double-double – her team-leading seventh on the year and 15th career – with 31 assists and 12 digs to go along with a pair of service aces. Coon added 21 assists for the Titans.

Fregien registered a match-high 31 digs and three service aces, marking her third match this season with 30 or more digs, while Hust recorded 13 digs and three service aces.

UW-Oshkosh owned edges of 64-53 in kills, .207 to .151 in hitting percentage, 92-78 in digs and 9-7 in service aces. Chicago held a 16-4.5 advantage in blocks after heading into the contest ranked seventh in the country in total blocks and ninth in total kills.

Following an opening set in which the Titans hit .000, UW-Oshkosh trounced the Maroons during the ensuing two frames, outhitting Chicago, .270 to .097, during the span as Dahlquist capped Set 2 with a kill and Kirsch ended Set 3 with a termination.

Chicago claimed a tense fourth set was tied at 20, 21 and 22 before the Maroons tallied the final three points.

UW-Oshkosh left no doubt in the decisive fifth set, racing out to an 8-3 lead at the side change. The fifth-set lead was fueled by a pair of Dahlquist kills, one termination apiece by Pearson and Sundholm, a Coon service ace, and a combination block from Dahlquist and Moe. Consecutive kills by Kirsch and Sundholm provided match-point at 14-6, and a Hust service ace secured the victory on the following point.

Chicago leaders included Maggie McInerney with 17 kills, Natalie Schildt with 16 kills and 21 digs, and Diya Mishra with nine blocks.

UW-Oshkosh wraps up its trip to the Windy City on Saturday (Sept. 24) with matches against Kean University (N.J.) and host North Park.
