Titans Defeat Falcons For Fourth Straight WIAC Win

Riley Kindt and Carissa Sundholm both produced double-doubles to lead the UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory at UW-River Falls during the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and regular season finale Friday (Oct. 29).

UW-Oshkosh (18-11, 4-3 WIAC) downed UW-River Falls (15-14, 1-6) in set scores of 27-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-16 to earn its 10th win in the past 11 meetings with the Falcons.

With the victory UW-Oshkosh, which won its fourth conference match in a row, will be the fourth seed at the six-team WIAC Championship that commences with a pair of first round matches Tuesday (Nov. 2). The Titans earned the fourth seed by virtue of a sets-won tiebreaker involving third seeded UW-Stevens Point (24-6, 4-3 WIAC) and fifth seeded UW-La Crosse (19-10, 4-3).

UW-Oshkosh opens the WIAC Championship at home against UW-La Crosse at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Kolf Sports Center.

Sundholm collected a match best and season high-tying 17 kills to go along with 14 digs for her fifth double-double of the year and seventh career. Kindt added 12 kills, a season best 10 digs and four blocks while hitting .400 during her first double-double of the year. Sundholm was the team's kills leader for the 18th occasion this year while Kindt has paced the squad 15 times.

Olivia Breunig and Madyson Pearson both chipped in eight kills as the Titans owned advantages of 57-54 in kills, .257 to .177 in hitting percentage, 80-73 in digs and 9-2 in blocks. UW-River Falls had a 6-2 edge in service aces.

UW-Oshkosh, which hit .347 in the first set and .425 with zero attack errors during the fourth frame, went into Friday ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III with 221 total blocks.

Kalli Mau dished out 20 assists and Emma Kiekhofer 16 while copiloting the UW-Oshkosh offense. Mau and Kiekhofer also compiled eight and six digs, respectively.

Amelia Hust, who entered the match ranked 11th in the nation with 525 digs, led the Titans in digs for the 25th time this season with 18 digs while Abby Fregien scooped up 17 digs.

Katie Koerper had 16 kills to lead UW-River Falls, which also received 13 kills on 21 errorless swings from Sami Hilley, 12 kills and 14 digs from Kameri Meredith, 48 assists and four service aces from Haley Cuba, and 36 digs from Brooke Voigt.

UW-River Falls claimed a 23-18 lead in the first set following a string of five consecutive points. However, UW-Oshkosh rebounded to knot the frame at 23 with five straight points of its own before taking a 24-23 edge on a Brynna Mayer kill. The Titans' six point surge also included three kills by Pearson and a Sundholm termination. Tied for the eighth time at 25, the Titans won the opening set following a pair of Sundholm kills.

UW-Oshkosh erased deficits of 4-0, 7-3 and 13-9 in the second set, tallying eight consecutive points for a 22-16 cushion. The eight point skein was highlighted by kills from Breunig, Kindt and Sundholm in addition to a Kindt block that capped the run. The Titans then finished off the set with a pair of Falcons errors to take a commanding two set advantage.

UW-River Falls pounded down 15 kills to win the third set and owned a 9-7 lead in the fourth frame, but the Titans once again rallied, scoring six points in a row for a 13-9 advantage they would not relinquish. The six point surge was highlighted by terminations from Kindt, Pearson and Robyn Kirsch. Clinging to a 13-12 edge, UW-Oshkosh put the match away with a string of seven unanswered points, including two kills apiece from Kindt and Sundholm, and a Pearson termination, for a 20-12 lead. The Titans then put the finishing touches on the victory following kills by Mayer and Sundholm.
