Titans Earn Sweep Of Rams

Riley Kindt and Carissa Sundholm had eight kills apiece and combined for 12 blocks to lead the UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team to a 3-0 nonconference victory over Cornell College (Iowa) on Saturday (Oct. 23) in Whitewater.

UW-Oshkosh (16-11) earned its first ever sweep over Cornell College (15-10), downing the Rams in set scores of 25-19, 25-13, 25-17. The Titans won their only two previous meetings with Cornell College by 3-2 scores in 2010 and 2015.

The Titans owned advantages Saturday of 36-28 in kills, .268 to .039 in hitting percentage 45-43 in digs, 12-3 in blocks and 7-6 in service aces. UW-Oshkosh held the Rams to .097 hitting or less each set, including a -.069 rate during the third frame, while hitting .205 in Set 1, .313 in Set 2 and .333 in Set 3.

Cornell College's .039 hitting percentage was its second lowest of the season. UW-Oshkosh has now hit better than .200 on 12 occasions this year. The Titans went into the weekend ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III with 1,216 kills and fifth with 200 blocks.

Kindt, who collected a season high-tying eight blocks, hit .462 on 13 swings for the Titans while Sundholm hit .333 on 21 attempts to go along with nine digs and a career high-tying four blocks. Sundholm and Kindt have now paced UW-Oshkosh in kills 16 and 14 times, respectively.

Olivia Breunig and Joslyn Wolff both added seven kills for a balanced UW-Oshkosh offense that also received three terminations apiece from Kate Nottoli and Madyson Pearson. Breunig hit .467 on 15 errorless swings while Pearson chipped in four blocks.

UW-Oshkosh's Amelia Hust, who entered the weekend ranked fourth in the country with 506 digs, led the Titans for the 23rd time with nine more digs and registered four service aces Saturday.

Emma Kiekhofer had 15 assists and Kalli Mau 14 while co-piloting the Titans offense.

Cornell College leaders included Ilah Perez-Johnson with nine kills on -.036 hitting and 11 digs, Clare Green with 23 assists, and Olivia Richards with three service aces.

The first set was tied for the seventh and final time at 15, when UW-Oshkosh scored three straight points on kills by Kindt and Sundholm. Clinging to a 19-18 edge, the Titans closed out the opening set with six of the last seven points, including two on Breunig kills, one on a Kindt service ace, and two more on blocks from Breunig, Nottoli and Pearson.

UW-Oshkosh took the lead for good in the second set at 3-2 following a triple block from Kindt, Sundholm and Pearson. The Titans went on to extend their advantage to 12-6 after a Nottoli kill and to 18-9 following another triple block by Kindt, Sundholm and Pearson. UW-Oshkosh wrapped up the second frame with four consecutive points, including three on kills by Breunig and Wolff.

The Titans then took control of the third set on the strength of seven unanswered points for a 12-8 advantage. The pivotal seven-point spurt featured kills from Breunig and Kindt, a Sundholm service ace, and blocks by Breunig, Kindt and Sundholm. The Rams pulled within 18-16, but the Titans responded with seven of the final eight points of the match as Kindt had a pair of kills during the 7-1 run, Sundholm added a termination, and Breunig and Kindt accounted for blocks to secure the sweep.

UW-Oshkosh, winner of four of its last five contests, hosts its final regular season home match of the year against Beloit College on Wednesday (Oct. 27) in Kolf Sports Center.
