Titans Rally To Shock Nationally Ranked Pointers

The UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team overcame a two-set deficit and a 10-4 hole in the final frame to stun nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point, 3-2, during the penultimate Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest of the season Wednesday (Oct. 20) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (15-11, 3-3 WIAC) held UW-Stevens Point (20-6, 3-3) to a .071 hitting percentage over the final three sets to claim the victory and move into a tie for fourth in the conference standings with one league match remaining. The win – by set scores of 16-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-13 – clinches UW-Oshkosh's berth into the six-team WIAC Championship that commences Nov. 2.

UW-Stevens Point, ranked 21st in the NCAA Division III by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, suffered its first loss to the Titans since a 3-0 decision Oct. 31, 2017.

The Pointers raced out to a 10-4 lead in the fifth set, but the Titans responded with five consecutive points on three UW-Stevens Point attack errors, a Madyson Pearson kill and a Kalli Mau service ace to pull within 10-9. UW-Stevens Point extended its lead to 12-9 before UW-Oshkosh tallied six of the final seven points to secure the victory.

The Titans began their match ending run courtesy of a Pointers service error ahead of a combination block by Kate Nottoli and Carissa Sundholm that cut the deficit to 12-11. Sundholm followed with a pair of kills, including a sharp-angled down ball that fell untouched near the Pointers' 3-meter line for a 13-12 lead. UW-Stevens Point knotted the score at 13 via a UW-Oshkosh attack error. However, the Titans capped their unlikely comeback with back-to-back kills from Pearson and Riley Kindt on the ensuing two points.

Sundholm collected 15 kills to pace the Titans, who also received a season high-tying 11 terminations from Joslyn Wolff, nine from Kindt, eight from Pearson and six from Olivia Breunig. Sundholm has now led UW-Oshkosh in kills 15 times this season.

Mau and Emma Kiekhofer both produced double-doubles while codirecting the UW-Oshkosh offense as Mau dished out 24 assists, scooped 12 digs and registered two service aces. Kiekhofer had 17 assists, 13 digs and a pair of service aces. The double-doubles were Mau's team leading eighth this season and Kiekhofer's sixth of the year and 10th career.

UW-Oshkosh's Amelia Hust, who entered the match ranked sixth in the country with 481 digs, added 25 Wednesday to lead the team for the 22nd occasion this season. Rachael Russo added 17 digs for the Titans after heading into the night with 17 on the year in 13 matches played.

The Titans finished with a .159 to .130 advantage in hitting percentage. UW-Stevens Point, which had 32 attack errors, held edges of 56-53 in kills, 88-85 in digs, 11-9 in blocks and 11-5 in service aces. UW-Oshkosh went into Wednesday ranked fifth nationally with 191 total blocks and eighth in the country with 1,655 total digs.

UW-Stevens Point's Ashley Kopp led all players with 20 kills, 25 digs and three service aces while hitting .060 on 67 swings. Kopp was fifth in the division before the match with 353 kills and ninth with 4.25 kills per set.

Reis Derousseau and Guresi Mena chipped in 10 and nine kills, respectively, for the Pointers. UW-Stevens Point team leaders also included Grace Michalske with 48 assists and Derousseau with seven blocks.

UW-Stevens Point pounded down 16 kills and hit .275 en route to winning the opening set and limited the Titans to a .073 hitting percentage during the second frame to take a commanding two-set advantage.

UW-Oshkosh led each point of the third set, building cushions of 12-7 following a Sundholm kill and 20-13 after a Kindt termination, and took the lead for good during the fourth frame at 18-17 as a result of a Kopp attack error. Set 4 was tied 11 times, but the Titans, who improved to 5-5 in five-set matches on the year, sided out to victory after claiming a 22-19 lead. Kills by Nottoli, Wolff and Pearson accounted for the final three UW-Oshkosh points of the crucial fourth set.

UW-Stevens Point, playing its first five-set match this season, fashioned its 10-4 lead in Set 5 on the strength of four Kopp kills, terminations from both Derousseau and Sophia Lee, a Kelsie Belfiori service ace, and a Megan Lau kill.

UW-Oshkosh travels to Whitewater to play Cornell College (Iowa) on Saturday (Oct. 23).
