Titans Register Sweep Of Green Knights, Muskies

The UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team registered 19 blocks on the way to winning a pair of matches in thrilling fashion Wednesday (Sept. 8) in De Pere.

UW-Oshkosh (4-2) won the final two sets to stun host St. Norbert College, 3-2, overcoming deficits of 5-0 and 13-8 during the final frame before sweeping Lakeland University by coming back to win the second set with a 5-1 run and holding on to win the third frame on the fourth match-point.

The Titans defeated St. Norbert College in set scores of 25-18, 15-25, 22-25, 25-16, 15-13 and Lakeland University by scores of 25-11, 27-25, 26-24. UW-Oshkosh upped its record to 25-1 against Lakeland University since 1989 and won for the seventh time in the past eight meetings with St. Norbert College.

In the five-set victory over the Green Knights, UW-Oshkosh exchanged lopsided wins during the first two frames until St. Norbert College climbed out of a 20-17 hole in the third set with a string of six consecutive points. The Titans knotted the match with a comfortable win in the fourth set to set up a drama-filled final frame.

St. Norbert College (0-5) raced out to leads of 5-0, 10-5 and 13-8 before UW-Oshkosh tallied each of the last seven points to cap a wild final stanza. An Emily Terry kill put the Green Knights two points away from victory at 13-8, but a Brynna Mayer kill staved off match-point and cut the Titans' deficit to 13-9. A St. Norbert College attack error preceded another Mayer termination to pull UW-Oshkosh within 13-11. Madyson Pearson followed with three straight kills of her own to provide the Titans an unlikely match-point at 14-13. Courtney Pearson then capped the tremendous comeback with a service ace.

The Green Knights fell despite holding slim advantages of 51-45 in kills, .091 to .065 in hitting percentage and 95-92 in digs. The Titans owned a 13-8 in blocks, and both teams had five service aces.

Carissa Sundholm paced the Titans with 11 kills, Courtney Pearson added eight terminations, and Mayer, Riley Kindt and Madyson Pearson each chipped in seven. Mayer led the way with five blocks.

UW-Oshkosh's Kalli Mau notched her third consecutive and fourth overall double-double of the year with 20 assists and 13 digs. Emma Kiekhofer recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 assists and 13 digs while sharing setting duties with Mau.

Amelia Hust spearheaded the Titans' backrow defense with 27 digs.

St. Norbert College's Brooke Clement led all players with 12 kills. The Green Knights had three players with double-digit terminations as Terry had 11 and Grace Baumann 10. Clement and Baumann both scooped up 15 digs to record double-doubles.

Devon Nardoni and Ellie Hartson dished out 25 and 16 assists, respectively, for St. Norbert College, which received a match-high 34 digs from Liz Maastricht and 14 digs from Nardoni.

In the win over Lakeland University, the Titans held the Muskies to a hitting percentage well below .100 in each set, including a -.067 rate during the opening frame. Lakeland University mustered a mere .045 hitting percentage in Set 2 and a .087 rate in Set 3.

UW-Oshkosh hit. 250 during the first set and .175 overall, finishing the contest with advantages of 35-27 in kills, .175 to .033 in hitting percentage and 6-5 in blocks. The Muskies held a 7-5 edge in service aces, and both teams had 53 digs.

Kindt and Sundholm shared the team lead with eight kills apiece for the Titans while Courtney Pearson recorded six terminations, Madyson Pearson five, and Mayer and Olivia Breunig four. Kindt accounted for three of the team's five service aces.

Hust, the reigning Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, once again paced UW-Oshkosh with 18 digs. Hust has now led the team in digs each of the six matches this year.

Mau narrowly missed another double-double, registering 15 assists and nine digs. Kiekhofer added nine assists for the Titans.

Lakeland University received a team-best six kills from S'Niya Grant, nine assists from Rosie Carrasquillo, 19 digs from Sydney Pingitore, and three service aces from Katie Metzler.

After building leads of 7-0, 22-7 and never trailing during the first set, UW-Oshkosh jumped out to a 7-2 advantage in the second set before the Muskies scored six unanswered points to claim their first lead of the match at 14-10. The Titans responded with four straight points of their own, including two on back-to-back kills from Courtney Pearson and Madyson Pearson, to pull even at 14.

Lakeland University (0-4) regained control with a spurt of four straight points – the last three on service aces – to reclaim a 20-15 lead in the second set and reached set-point at 24-22 following a Pingitore kill. The Titans responded with three consecutive points on kills from Madyson Pearson, Courtney Pearson and Kindt to claim a set-point at 25-24. A Titan service error tied the score at 25, but UW-Oshkosh closed out the set with a Kindt kill and a Muskies attack error.

UW-Oshkosh tallied nine of the first 10 points of the third set, but Lakeland University rallied to tie the score at 20 and again at 24. However, after failing to convert a match-point at 24-23, the Titans put the match away on a Muskies attack error and a block from Madyson Pearson to secure the win.

The Titans play their first home matches of the 2021 season when they host the Polito's Classic on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 10-11) in Kolf Sports Center. UW-Oshkosh opens the event by hosting Lake Forest College (Ill.) at 7 p.m. Friday.
