Blugolds Sweep Titans To Remain In WIAC Lead

Madelyn Pashibin had 12 kills to lead UW-Eau Claire to a 3-0 victory over the UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team on Saturday (Sept. 30) in Eau Claire.

UW-Eau Claire (8-6, 3-0 WIAC) remained in a three-way tie atop the league standings by defeating the Titans in set scores of 25-16, 25-20, 25-23. The Blugolds are tied for first place in the WIAC with UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater with four league matches to play.

Pashibin, who entered the contest with a WIAC-best 3.78 kills per set and a .412 hitting percentage, hit .294 on a team-leading 34 attempts.

Jessica Coyne and Krista Meyer added nine kills apiece for the Blugolds, who also received seven kills from Kendra Baierl, a match-high 34 assists from Madison Surprise and 14 digs from Talia Jaskulske.

Tina Elstner paced UW-Oshkosh (8-11, 0-3 WIAC) with 12 kills and added 12 digs for her sixth double-double of the year.

Titan Samantha Jaeke also notched a double-double with 24 assists and 10 digs. Jaeke, who has a pair of triple-doubles this season, has compiled four straight double-doubles and seven overall on the year.

UW-Oshkosh's Brianna Witter matched her season high with seven kills while Shelby Coron added six kills and a match-best four blocks. Rachel Gardner led the Titans with 14 digs.

UW-Eau Claire concluded the match with advantages in kills (40-35), hitting percentage (.197 to .147), assists (36-34) and service aces (6-2). UW-Oshkosh owned a 49-48 edge in digs and an 8-4 advantage in blocks.

The Blugolds scored five consecutive points to claim a 5-2 lead in Set 1 and held the advantage until a combination block from Coron and Renee Rush knotted the score at 8. UW-Eau Claire then tallied 11 of the next 14 points for a 19-13 advantage and led by at least five points for the remainder of the frame as the Blugolds pounded down 15 kills and hit .308.

UW-Eau Claire scored the first three points of the second set and never trailed en route to taking a 2-0 lead in the match. UW-Oshkosh pulled even at 17 following a block by Coron, a service ace by Jaeke and an attack error by Pashibin on consecutive points. However, the Blugolds responded with three straight points, including two on Titan attack errors, for a 20-17 lead. After a kill from Coron trimmed the Titans' deficit to 20-18, three straight UW-Oshkosh errors upped the UW-Eau Claire lead to 23-18. A kill by Coyne ended the set four points later.

UW-Oshkosh jumped out to a 12-9 lead in Set 3 after a kill from Carly Lemke, but the Blugolds tied the score at 13 following two straight Titan errors. A kill from Coron knotted the score at 20, and a kill by Witter continued a four-point surge for the Titans as back-to-back attack errors by UW-Eau Claire increased UW-Oshkosh's lead to 23-20. But kills from Coyne and Pashibin cut the Titan lead to one point, and the Blugolds went on to capture the final five points, including the last two on kills by Surprise and Meyer.

The Titans return home to host the eight-team UW-Oshkosh Classic on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 6-7) in Kolf Sports Center. UW-Oshkosh begins action against North Park University (Ill.) and University of St. Thomas (Minn.) on Friday. University of St. Thomas is ranked 17th in the NCAA Division III by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
