Tina Elstner recorded 19 kills and Nerissa Vogt added 13 to lead UW-Oshkosh past Elmhurst College (Ill.), 3-1, in a battle of nationally ranked teams at the UW-Whitewater Invitational on Saturday (Oct. 22.).

UW-Oshkosh (23-6), ranked 22nd in the NCAA Division III by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, defeated 16th-ranked Elmhurst College in set scores of 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 28-26. The Titans had lost five of the six previous meetings in the series since 2010.

The Titans owned advantages in kills (57-53), hitting percentage (.289 to .167), digs (71-63) and blocks (10-5). UW-Oshkosh entered the match leading the nation in total blocks and blocks per set.

UW-Oshkosh registered at least 13 kills and hit .229 or better in each set while Elmhurst College hit below .200 in the first three frames, including .087 in Set 2.

Elstner, who was named to the six-member all-tournament team, added 13 digs for her second straight double-double and her 10th of the year while Vogt had a match-high six blocks.

Lexi Thiel notched her 31st career double-double with 45 assists and 13 digs for the Titans, who also received nine kills from Samantha Jaeke, seven kills and four blocks from Renee Rush, and a match-best 19 digs from Rachel Gardner.

In the opening set, UW-Oshkosh scored four straight points to build a 20-13 lead following kills from Elstner, Jaeke and Vogt and a service ace by Elstner. The Bluejays rallied to tie the score at 21 behind an 8-1 run that featured six Titan errors. Tied again at 22, Elmhurst College got a kill from Hannah Davis and a service ace from Alli Rogers, and another kill from Davis ended the frame two points later.

In the second frame, the Titans claimed their first lead at 13-12 on an Elmhurst College attack error and later extended the advantage to 21-15 with a four-point run that consisted of three kills by Elstner and one termination by Vogt. UW-Oshkosh closed out the frame with four of the final five points, including the final point on a combination block from Rush and Vogt.

Trailing 10-9 in the third set, the Titans scored five consecutive points for a 14-10 edge and maintained a lead for the remainder of the frame. The decisive five-point skein featured kills by three different players and two combination blocks. UW-Oshkosh led by as many as eight points at 24-16 before securing the set on a kill by Lemke.

Elmhurst College seemed poised to send the match to a fifth set after holding a 22-17 lead on a kill by Hannah Nimrick and a 24-22 edge on a termination by Mel Lundin. However, a combination block by Lemke and Rush staved off one set-point, and a Bluejay error knotted the score at 24. The Titans also fended off set-points at 25-24 and 26-25 with kills from Lemke and Brooke Brinkman. UW-Oshkosh then earned the victory on a kill by Elstner and an Elmhurst College attack error on the Titans' first match-point.
