Several Titans Contribute To Victory Over Sabres

Katelyn Malcheski had a team-leading 10 kills as the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team concluded its non-conference schedule for the 2015 regular season with a 3-0 victory over Marian University on Wednesday (Oct. 28) in Fond du Lac.

All 19 Titans available to play contributed toward UW-Oshkosh's win by set scores of 25-9, 25-20, 25-21. UW-Oshkosh, which owns a 15-2 record against Marian University since 1989, won its ninth consecutive match over the Sabres.

UW-Oshkosh (24-7), ranked 21st in the NCAA Division III by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, improved to 14-0 in three-set matches this season.

The Titans totaled 48 kills and hit .333 for the match. UW-Oshkosh registered 16 kills on .412 hitting in the first set, 17 kills on a .255 rate in the second and 15 kills on .367 hitting in the third.

UW-Oshkosh held significant advantages in kills (48-33), hitting percentage (.333 to .162), service aces (5-2), digs (63-48) and blocks (7-1).

Tina Elstner and Brianna Witter added seven kills apiece for the Titans while Brooke Brinkman and Carly Lemke both chipped in with five. Renee Rush recorded four kills on seven errorless swings in one set played.

Mandy Trautmann led UW-Oshkosh with 15 digs in two sets played. Morgan Windau and Lexi Thiel had 23 and 13 assists, respectively, while sharing setting duties for the Titans. Nerissa Vogt had two blocks to extend her Division III-leading total to 147 on the season.

UW-Oshkosh opened up leads of 6-0, 15-5 and 22-6 and never trailed in the first set. Marian University scored consecutive points just once in the first frame while UW-Oshkosh had runs of seven, six and four straight points. The Titan's six-point burst to begin the match was fueled by two kills and a block by Witter, and their seven-point run was aided by four Sabres errors.

Marian University (6-22) raced out to a 7-4 advantage in the second set before UW-Oshkosh rallied to tie the score at 7 on a kill by Elstner. The Titans tallied six straight points to reclaim a 16-12 lead on a combination block by Vogt and Witter. The Sabres cut their deficit to 23-20, but the Titans marked the last two points of the set on a kill by Lemke and a Marian University attack error on set point.

The Titans led each point in the third frame behind a starting lineup of five reserves. Leading 15-12, UW-Oshkosh recorded four consecutive kills, including two by Brinkman, for a 19-12 advantage. Marian University closed to within 22-19, but a kill by Rush and a service ace by Sarah Halles provided match point at 24-19. The Sabres registered two straight kills, but their comeback bid ended with a service error on the third match point.

Jessica Roberts led all players with 12 kills for Marian University, which also received match-high totals of 30 assists from Amber Baker and 18 digs from Katrina Jansen.

UW-Oshkosh closes its conference schedule this weekend in Kolf Sports Center. Wins over both UW-River Falls on Friday (Oct. 30) and UW-Stout on Saturday (Oct. 31) would give the Titans at least a share of the WIAC championship and the top seed for the league's postseason tournament.
