Titans Sweep Minnesota Progams To Extend Winning Streak

The UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to a season-high six matches with victories over Minnesota programs University of St. Thomas and Martin Luther College at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational on Saturday (Oct. 17) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Titans (20-5), ranked 19th in the NCAA Division III by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, defeated the University of St. Thomas in set scores of 25-20, 19-25, 25-15, 19-25, 15-9 and Martin Luther College in set scores of 25-13, 25-12, 25-21.

Katelyn Malcheski led four UW-Oshkosh players in double-figure kills with a season-best 22 in the win over University of St. Thomas.

Tina Elstner matched her career high with 13 kills and five blocks for the Titans, who also received 11 kills from Brianna Witter, and 10 kills and a match-high eight blocks from Nerissa Vogt.

UW-Oshkosh's Lexi Thiel amassed a season-high 58 assists and 14 digs, while Mandy Trautmann led all players with 28 digs and three service aces.

The Titans held advantages in kills (63-46), hitting percentage (.240 to .166), digs (76-58) and blocks (13.5 to 6.5). UW-Oshkosh had 17 kills on .417 hitting in the third set and seven kills with a .357 rate in the decisive fifth frame.

Taylor Lewis led University of St. Thomas with 20 kills, while Brooke Reichart added nine. Rebecca Hawkins and Katharine Mallak had 23 and 19 assists, respectively, while sharing setting duties for the Tommies. Jennifer Wild paced the team with 15 digs.

Against Martin Luther College, Vogt had a match-high nine kills on 14 attempts as 18 Titans received playing time.

Brooke Brinkman contributed eight kills on 12 attempts for UW-Oshkosh while Allison Rueger chipped in six kills and Elstner five. Thiel had a match-best 23 assists and Morgan Windau 12. Trautmann had a match-high 13 digs.

UW-Oshkosh outhit the Knights, .312 to .000, and had eight service aces. The Titans hit a robust .500 with 14 kills in the first set, while Martin Luther College hit -.107 in the second frame and below .100 in the other two sets.

Kira Grev had six kills and 10 assists for the Knights. Laura Schoenherr led Martin Luther College with 11 assists, and Emily Neeb recorded a team-leading 12 digs.

Trautmann and Vogt were named to the 10-member all-tournament team as the Titans concluded their own two-day invitational unbeaten in three matches.

Joining the UW-Oshkosh duo on the all-tournament team were Courtney Birkett and Sophie Merrifield from Colorado College, Kyleigh Block from Illinois Wesleyan University, Brittany Laffin and Gabby Thomas from UW-Stevens Point, Lewis from University of St. Thomas, and Sydney Racky and Brittany Robinson from UW-Whitewater.

Although no champion was determined at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational, the Titans and 12th-ranked UW-Whitewater (21-3) were the lone teams to compile 3-0 records.

UW-Oshkosh has won seven of the last nine meetings with University of St. Thomas (7-15) and all three matchups with Martin Luther College (4-22) since 1999.

The Titans return to league play on Wednesday (Oct. 21) when they travel to 17th-ranked UW-Stevens Point (20-7, 1-3 WIAC).
