Titans Remain Unbeaten In WIAC Play
Nerissa Vogt had 11 kills and seven blocks and Katelyn Malcheski led all players with 13 kills to lift the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (Oct. 10) in Eau Claire.
UW-Oshkosh (17-5, 4-0 WIAC), ranked 19th in the NCAA Division III by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, won the match in set scores of 21-25, 25-14, 25-14, 25-20.
The Titans maintained their one-game lead over UW-La Crosse (13-7, 3-1 WIAC) and UW-Whitewater (18-3, 3-1) in the WIAC standings with three matches to play. UW-Oshkosh defeated both UW-La Crosse and 12th-ranked UW-Whitewater earlier this season.
Tina Elstner added 10 kills and five blocks for UW-Oshkosh. Lexi Thiel and Mandy Trautmann paced the Titans with 35 assists and 26 digs, respectively.
The Titans, who snapped UW-Eau Claire's six-match winning streak, had an 11-1 advantage in blocks and outhit the Blugolds, .222 to .098.
UW-Oshkosh tied the first set for the 11th and final time at 20 on a service ace by Trautmann, but UW-Eau Claire answered with five of the next six points to claim the first frame on a kill by Hannah Theisen.
The Titans tallied four consecutive points in the second set for an 8-4 lead on a service ace by Laura Trochinski. The Blugolds cut their deficit to 10-7 before UW-Oshkosh scored five unanswered points to extend its lead to 15-7 on a kill by Elstner. The Titans' lead ballooned to 20-9 before UW-Oshkosh tied the match on two UW-Eau Claire errors on the final two points of the frame.
UW-Oshkosh never trailed in the third set after racing out to an 11-4 advantage. UW-Eau Claire trimmed the Titans' lead to 15-13 on consecutive kills by Jessica Coyne and Keagan Kinsella, but UW-Oshkosh earned 10 of the next 11 points to secure the set on two straight service aces by Vogt and a solo block by Thiel.
The Titans opened the fourth set with a 12-4 lead on a Malcheski kill and led by at least seven points until the Blugolds pulled with 21-15 following three straight kills. UW-Oshkosh scored its last six points on UW-Eau Claire errors, including on a serve out of bounds on the Titans' second match point.
UW-Eau Claire (16-7, 2-2 WIAC) committed nine attack errors in each of the last three sets, while UW-Oshkosh ended the match with a total of 12. The Blugolds hit .040 in the second set and -.030 in the third.
Katrina Raskie had 11 kills and 19 digs for UW-Eau Claire. Kelly Riesgraf added 10 kills for the Blugolds, who also received match-best totals of 47 assists from Jenna Smits and 30 digs from Talia Jaskulske.
The Titans, winners of eight of their last 10 matches, host the seven-team UW-Oshkosh Invitational next weekend in Kolf Sports Center. UW-Oshkosh will play Illinois Wesleyan University on Friday (Oct. 16) and Minnesota opponents University of St. Thomas and Martin Luther College on Saturday (Oct. 17).
