Titans Battle Their Way Past Falcons

Despite an off night offensively and at the service line, the UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team defeated UW-River Falls 25-16, 16-25, 25-23, 25-20 in its conference home opener on Friday (Oct. 1) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (14-2/2-0 WIAC) overcame 28 hitting errors and 13 service errors by scoring the last three points of set two and the last seven of set four to remain undefeated in the conference.

The Titans, ranked 10th in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, was led by Andrea Smith (Sr. • Fond du Lac) who had 14 kills, 13 digs and three service aces. Aleisha Bagin (So. • West Bend) provided a match-high 15 kills and added seven digs, Christina Cahoon (Sr. • Watertown) picked up 25 digs and Andrea Felton (So. • New Berlin) had 11 kills and nine digs.

Robyn Eggert (Fr. • Woodridge, Ill.) scooped up 12 digs and Morgan Liebetrau (So. • West Bend) led the offense with 41 assists and provided seven digs. Brittany Gruning (So. • Mukwonago) led the Titans with three blocks.

Tied at 10-10 in set one, UW-Oshkosh extended its lead to 22-13 by going on a 12-3 scoring run. The Titans traded points before taking the lead in the match.

Hitting errors plagued the Titans in set two as they committed eight on 42 swings. After bolting out to a 4-0 advantage, UW-Oshkosh went cold by giving up 11 of the next 15 points to trail 11-8. Knotted at 11-11 points each, the Falcons exploded for five straight points for a 16-11 lead. UW-River Falls tied the match at one set each with a 9-5 scoring skein to end the stanza.

UW-River Falls (10-7/1-3 WIAC) held a lead of 9-6, before UW-Oshkosh took its own three point cushion at 14-11. The Titans earned a 17-13 advantage before the visitors inched to a 23-22 lead only to see the hosts score the last three points of the set.

Trailing 18-12 heading into a time-out, UW-Oshkosh responded by going on a 13-2 scoring eruption, including the last seven points of the match to claim their six straight victory over UW-River Falls.

Courtney Preiner led the Falcons with 25 digs. Erin Green tallied nine kills and four blocks, Linnea Osterberg had 12 digs and Mackenzie Suda dished out 26 assists and collected nine digs.
