Titans Earn The Big Prize At Muskie Invitational

The UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team opened the 2010 season by capturing its first tournament title of the year by defeating three opponents to capture the Muskie Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 3-4) in Sheboygan.

UW-Oshkosh (3-0) started play by sweeping host Lakeland College 26-24, 25-17, 25-14 on Friday and outlasting Millikin University (Ill.) 13-25, 25-15, 25-22, 22-25, 15-10 and UW-River Falls 25-19, 26-28, 25-18, 25-16 on Saturday.

The Titans' Aleisha Bagin (So. • West Bend) was named the tournament's most valuable player and was joined on the six-person all-tournament team by Christina Cahoon (Sr. • Watertown) and Brittany Gruning (So. • Mukwonago), UW-River Falls' Danielle Gibbemeyer and Courtney Preiner and Millkin University's Kelsey England.

Bagin led UW-Oshkosh on the weekend with 40 kills. Andrea Felton (So. • New Berlin) added 82 assists, 21 kills and 29 digs, Cahoon 75 digs, Andrea Smith (Sr. • Fond du Lac) 22 kills, 41 digs and five service aces and Gruning 14 kills and 13 blocks. As a team the Titans only had four receiving errors in 12 sets played.

After a slow start against Lakeland College, UW-Oshkosh dominated the Muskies. Trialing 6-1 to start the first set, the Titans tied the score at 11-11. UW-Oshkosh inched out to a 22-20 lead before Lakeland College tied the score at 24-24. The Titans claimed the last two points to take the tight first set.

After being tied 14-14 in set two the Titans scored 36 of the next 53 points to record the sweep and advance to 19-0 all-time against the Muskies.

Bagin led the Titans with nine kills. Felton, Gruning and Larissa Krumplitsch (So. • Appleton) each added seven kills, Cahoon scooped up 16 digs and Brittney Cote (Jr. • Orland Park, Ill.) tallied seven. Felton dished out 29 assists and Gruning had five blocks.

UW-Oshkosh survived a dismal .130 team hitting percentage to beat Millikin University for the 12th straight time. The Titans fell behind early in the match by recording only six kills in the first stanza. Pulling out the next two sets, UW-Oshkosh was forced to a deciding fifth set by only hitting .086 in set four.

Set five was all UW-Oshkosh as the Titans received four kills by Bagin and three from Smith to capture their 16th win in the last 17 five-set matches.

Bagin led the Titans with 17 kills, followed by Smith with 11 and Felton with seven. Felton added 28 assists and 12 digs. Cahoon recorded 36 digs, Smith 16 and Cote 10 as the Titans racked up 83 in the match. Smith and Robyn Eggert (Fr. • Downers Grove, Ill.) each had two service aces and Gruning totaled four blocks.

In an early non-conference match-up with Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival UW-River Falls, UW-Oshkosh piled up 12 service aces and 83 digs to beat the Falcons for the fifth straight contest.

Bagin led the Titans offensively for the third straight match with 13 kills, followed by Smith with 12, Felton and Krumplitsch with seven and Gruning with six. Smith added 25 digs, Cahoon 23, Felton 11, Cote nine and Eggert six to lead the Titans' defense. Felton added 30 helpers, Smith three service aces and Gruning four blocks.

The Titans open up their home schedule Wednesday, September 8 in Kolf Sports Center. UW-Oshkosh begins play against Ripon College at 5:30 p.m. and also challenges Edgewood College at 7:30 p.m. The University of Chicago (Ill.) will also participate in the four-team tournament.
