Titans Open WIAC Play With Five-Set Win Over Pioneers

The UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team started its 2010 WIAC schedule in thrilling fashion with a five-set victory over UW-Platteville on Wednesday (Sept. 22) in Platteville.

UW-Oshkosh (13-2/1-0 WIAC), which has won 18 of its last 19 five-set matches, prevailed in set scores of 25-23, 12-25, 25-22, 21-25, 15-12. With the win, UW-Oshkosh joins UW-Whitewater (3-0) as the only undefeated teams in the WIAC.

Aleisha Bagin (So. • West Bend) led the Titans with 20 kills and Christina Cahoon (Sr. • Watertown) had a team-best 26 digs. Morgan Liebetrau (So. • West Bend) dished out 38 assists and collected 15 digs, five kills and two service aces and Brittany Gruning (So. • Mukwonago) added six kills and five blocks.

Andrea Felton (So. • New Berlin) provided 15 digs and 12 kills, Andrea Smith (Sr. • Fond du Lac) 18 digs, seven kills and four blocks and Robyn Eggert (Fr. • Woodridge, Ill.) eight digs.

Set one was close throughout with the Titans prevailing after scoring the last two points of the stanza. UW-Oshkosh relied on a 14-8 advantage in kills in the set to pull out the win. UW-Platteville turned the tables on the Titans in the second set by hitting .400 on 13 kills compared to UW-Oshkosh's -.062 hitting percentage on only six put downs.

Set three was tight as well before UW-Oshkosh inched out to a 22-18 advantage. UW-Platteville came back to knot score at 22-22 before the visitors finished the stanza by scoring the last three points. The fourth set was tied at 17-17 before the Pioneers tied the match at 2-2 sets each by winning eight of the last 12 points of the set.

In a classic five-set battle, UW-Oshkosh remained in control in the early stages of the set, pulling out to leads of 8-5 and 11-7 before UW-Platteville tied the score at 12-12. The Titans pulled out the win after a kill by Felton, a block by Krumplitsch and Smith and a hitting error on the Pioneers.

UW-Platteville (7-2/3-1 WIAC) was led by Stephanie Kirchner who had 21 kills and 11 digs. Melissa Hillebrand added 13 kills, Leslie White 27 digs, Ali Sikic 51 assists and Abby Carey 17 digs.

UW-Oshkosh, who is ranked 10th in the NCAA Division III according to the American Volleyball Coaches Association, has off until a WIAC match-up against UW-River Falls on Oct. 1 in Kolf Sports Center.
