Titans Battle Their Way Past Pointers

The UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team used a 52-39 advantage in kills to pull away from UW-Stevens Point in a 25-16, 26-28, 25-23, 25-16 victory on Wednesday (Oct. 13) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (20-3/5-0 WIAC) had double digit kills in each set to outhit UW-Stevens Point (15-10/2-3 WIAC), .214-.135, on the night. The Titans bolted to hitting percentages of .281 in set one and .361 in set four to remain the only undefeated team in the WIAC.

Aleisha Bagin (So. • West Bend) and Andrea Felton (So. • New Berlin) tallied 12 kills to lead the Titans. Jordyn Bratel (Fr. • Milwaukee) and Brittany Gruning (So. • Mukwonago) each added eight and Larissa Krumplitsch (So. • Appleton) seven.

Morgan Liebetrau (So. • West Bend) dished out 41 assists and added 13 digs and three service aces, Andrea Smith (Sr. • Fond du Lac) had 22 digs and Sarah Petermann (Fr. • Appleton) tallied 12 digs. Felton added 11 digs and four blocks, Robyn Eggert (Fr. • Woodridge, Ill.) 11 digs, Gruning five blocks and Bratel three service aces for the Titans.

UW-Oshkosh extended a 12-11 lead into a 23-15 cushion after a six-point scoring run to start the opening set. The Titans took the opening frame after a kill by Bratel.

UW-Stevens Point built a 9-5 advantage in set two before the Titans tied the score at 11-11. Tied again at 16-16, UW-Oshkosh built a 20-17 lead before UW-Stevens Point knotted the score at 21-21 after a four-point outburst. Again the Titans responded by scoring the next two points to hold a 23-21 lead.

The Pointers would not go away, tacking on a three-point run to reach set point at 24-23. UW-Oshkosh tied the score again at 25-25 and 26-26 before UW-Stevens Point took the second set by grabbing two straight points.

UW-Stevens Point exploded for leads of 6-3 and 10-5 in set three before the Titans went on an 8-3 scoring run to even the score at 13-13. After that, neither team held more than a two-point cushion until the Pointers went up 21-17. UW-Oshkosh reacted from there with their second 8-3 scoring outburst of the set to take the stanza 25-23.

The fourth set was all UW-Oshkosh as the team erupted for 16 kills, doubling up UW-Stevens Point. The Titans build a lead of 19-10 after a six-point scoring run and coasted to the victory.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked 10th in the latest AVCA Division III poll, had now beaten UW-Stevens Point 24 out of the last 26 meetings in the series.

Christina Brinkman led the Pointers with 13 kills, Chantel York dished out 33 assists and added eight digs and Molly Elderbrook had 17 digs. Kaitlin Wolfe scooped up 11 digs and put down seven kills, Lizzy Taylor had 14 digs and Kati Rau tallied eight kills.

Next up for the Titans is a big showdown at UW-Eau Claire on Friday (Oct. 15). The Blugolds are right behind UW-Oshkosh in the WIAC standings with a 5-1 league record.
