Three Titans Named All-Region
Alexandria Demco, Sydney Thompson and Cara Volz of the UW-Oshkosh women's outdoor track & field team received NCAA Division III All-Midwest Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
A total of 122 All-Midwest Region awards were distributed for the 2021 season, including 29 to athletes from UW-La Crosse, 14 from UW-Eau Claire and 11 from Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.).
To earn all-region honors, an athlete must be one of the top five individuals in their respective region on the final TFRRS Descending Order List. In addition, each member of a region's top-three relay team was also selected for distinction.
Demco, a sophomore, obtained all-region accolades in both the 800- and 1,500-meter runs. She won both events at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship held May 7-8 in River Falls.
Demco ranks second regionally and eighth nationally in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.59 from the Augustana College Twilight Final Qualifier held May 20 in Rock Island, Ill. She is seeded eighth in the event for the NCAA Division III Championship that will be held May 27-29 at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Complex in Greensboro, N.C.
In the 1,500-meter run, Demco ranks first in the region and 11th in the nation with a time of 4:32.81 from the Hillsdale College GINA Relays held April 22 in Hillsdale, Mich. She is seeded seventh in the event for this weekend's national meet.
Thompson, a senior, acquired all-region mention in both the discus and shot put. She was named Field Performer of the Meet after winning both events and placing fifth in the hammer throw at the WIAC Championship.
Thompson ranks first regionally and third nationally in the discus with a measurement of 153-0 from the WIAC Championship. She is seeded third in the event for the upcoming Division III Championship.
In the shot put, Thompson is the nation's top-ranked performer. She earned that decoration from a throw of 48-10 3/4 at the WIAC Championship. Thompson is seeded first in the shot put for this weekend's Division III Championship.
Volz, a senior, picked up an all-region award in the javelin. She finished third in the event at the WIAC Championship.
Volz ranks third regionally and 17th nationally in the javelin with a school-record measurement of 136-5 from the Augustana College Twilight Final Qualifier. She is seeded 17th in the event for the upcoming Division III national meet.
