Thompson Named Top Field Performer At WIAC Championship

UW-Oshkosh senior Sydney Thompson was selected Field Performer of the Meet at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship (presented by Culver's) held May 7-8 in River Falls.

Thompson won two throwing events, including the shot put, where she beat 22 other challengers with her winning and nation-leading measurement of 48-10 3/4. In the discus, Thompson finished first among 26 contestants with a distance of 153-0 that ranks her third in the country.

Thompson also finished fifth in the hammer throw with a cast of 165-8. She ranks 21st in the event nationally from a measurement of 168-9 achieved earlier this season.

UW-Oshkosh, an 11-time WIAC champion, placed fourth in the team standings at the league championship with 101 points.

UW-La Crosse scored 276 points to win its ninth straight WIAC title and 35th overall. UW-Eau Claire finished second to the Eagles with 164.5 points while UW-Stevens Point placed third with 106 and UW-Oshkosh fourth. UW-River Falls finished fifth among the eight competing teams with 49.5 points, UW-Stout sixth with 48, UW-Platteville seventh with 45 and UW-Whitewater eighth with 26.

Thompson is the ninth Titan to earn the Field Performer of the Meet award at the WIAC Outdoor Championship. She joins previous UW-Oshkosh honorees Stephanie Bostwick (1992), Sue Burke (1989, 1990, 1991), Tricia Haralson (1994), Deena Heins (2003), Robyn Jarocki (2004, 2006), Melissa Oleson (1996), Ellie Sitek (2009) and Breanna Strupp (2012).

UW-La Crosse's Emma Lawrence was named Track Performer of the Meet and Emily Dawidowich Newcomer of the Year.
