Titans Place Fifth At WIAC Outdoor Championship

Erica Munyan won the 3,000-meter steeplechase and finished second in the 5,000-meter run to lead UW-Oshkosh at the WIAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship (presented by Culver's) held Friday and Saturday (May 5-6) in Platteville.

Munyan defeated 15 other runners in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her winning time of 11:03.92, including McKenzie Kirtz of UW-La Crosse who finished second in 11:14.97. Munyan's victory was UW-Oshkosh's first in the event since Jenny Graef won the race in 2007.

Munyan's performance of 17:48.22 in the 5,000-meter run was one of three second-place results for the Titans. UW-Oshkosh also had Megan Leahy and Kristen Linzmeier record second-place performances of 11-9 1/4 in the pole vault and 4:48.59 in the 1,500-meter run, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh continued its domination in the hammer throw with Elizabeth Abhold's second straight winning effort. Abhold defeated 22 other contestants with her first-place distance of 172-3, including Kayla Pabst of UW-Stout who finished second with a mark of 169-10. The Titans have now owned the winner in the hammer throw for 15 straight years.

UW-Oshkosh had a trio of third-place finishers as Linzmeier posted a time of 2:16.20 in the 800-meter run, Cheyenne Moore a time of 17:49.10 in the 5,000-meter run and Isabella Samuels a measurement of 44-4 3/4 in the shot put.

The Titans' fourth-place results belonged to Karina Marchan and Ellie Infante with distances of 18-7 in the long jump and 161-5 in the hammer throw, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh also received fifth-place efforts of 114-8 in the javelin from Brenna Martyn, 11-3 1/2 in the pole vault from Alyssa Ryan and 15.23 in the 100-meter hurdles from Cara Volz.

The Titans' Lauren Wrensch finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 18-0 1/4.

In the relays, UW-Oshkosh's 400-meter group of Marchan, Volz, Susanna Roberts and Olivia Seeley finished sixth with a time of 48.65 seconds while the Titans' 1,600-meter quartet of Volz, Lindsey Denu, Morgan Endries and Melissa Srnka placed seventh with a time of 4:07.80.

UW-La Crosse scored 172.5 points to win the 46th version of the WIAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship. It was the Eagles' sixth straight victory and 32nd overall.

UW-Eau Claire finished second to UW-La Crosse with 154.5 points while UW-Stout placed third with 101.5, UW-Whitewater fourth with 96 and UW-Oshkosh, an 11-time champion, fifth with 93.

Completing the team standings were sixth-place UW-Stevens Point with 82 points, seventh-place UW-Platteville with 78.5 and eighth-place UW-River Falls with 40.

Jessie Reineck of UW-Eau Claire and Amber Williams of UW-Platteville were named the meet's Track and Field Performer of the Meet, respectively. UW-Eau Claire's Chip Schneider was selected as the league's Coach of the Year.

UW-Oshkosh athletes will compete in a variety of last chance qualifying meets over the next two weeks before participating at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship on May 25-27 in Geneva, Ohio.
