Titans Headed to WIAC Championships

OSHKOSH, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh track and field teams will compete at the WIAC Championships this weekend.

Steven Potter (1,500-meter run), Jonathan Wilburn (triple jump), John Ford (400-meter hurdles), Caleb Cornelius (high jump) and Joey Kean, Aaron Richardson and Jaylen Grant (4x100-meter relay) will all compete to defend their titles from last season.

Team National Ranking

The men's team moved up two spots in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's (USTFCCCA) to No. 11 in the nation. UW-La Crosse (No. 2), UW-Whitewater (No. 7), UW-Platteville (No. 9) and UW-Eau Claire (No. 23).

The women's team is unranked this week, but conference rival UW-La Crosse is ranked No. 1 in the nation.

#EventSquad Rankings

The women's 800-meter run squad made up of sophomore Cyna Madigan, junior Libby Geisness, freshman Josie Makurat and junior Meygan Benzing hold the 10th fastest average finish nationally with a time of 2:16.53.

The men's team holds six top-10 #EventSquads this week, including first place in the decathlon.

The decathlon team averages 6,038 points and is made up of freshmen Aden Sears and Charlie Nolan, and juniors Payton White and RJ Bosshart. With a squad made up of senior Jaylen Grant, freshman Ja'siah Williams, senior Denzel Thomas, and sophomore Keegan Cullison, the 100-meter dash team is third in the nation with an average of a 10.68 second time. The 22' 10 1/2" (6.97m) average long jump sits fourth nationally with a squad made up of sophomore AK Toheeb-Lawal, junior Diego Villalobos, and freshmen Caleb Wright and Elijah McCauley. The pole vault squad made up of senior Eli Tranel, sophomore Zach Zirgibel, junior RJ Bosshart and freshman Matthew Ewens average a height of 14' 9 3/4" (4.52m), which is the fifth-best in the country. Averaging a finish of 21.79 seconds, junior Rashaad Henderson, sophomore Londyn Little, and juniors Brett Clavijo and Jaylin Boatman sit sixth in the country in the 200-meter dash.

The high jump squad, with members sophomore Caleb Cornelius, Nolan, Sears and Ewens ranks eighth with an average bar clear of 6' 3 1/2" (1.92m).

Individual National Rankings

Madigan is fifth in the nation with a 2:10.24 time in the women's 800-meter run.

On the men's side of national rankings, Tranel and senior Jonathan Wilburn are both fifth nationally with a 16' 4 3/4" (5.00m) pole vault and a 49' 5 1/2" (15.07m) triple jump, respectively. Cornelius is sixth in the high jump with a best height of 6' 9" (2.06m). With two top-10 finishes in the heptathlon, Sears, and Nolan own scores of 6,553 and 6,470 points. Senior Steven Potter ranks eighth with a 3:47.21 time in the 1,500-meter run.

Conference Leaders

Potter leads the conference in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.00 and the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:47.21. Also leading the conference are Tranel in the pole vault with his 16' 4 3/4" (5.00m) mark and Wilburn in the triple jump with his 49' 5 1/2" (15.07m) mark.

Last Week's Highlights

Makurat won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the UW-Eau Claire Dick & Mary Johnson Invitational, running a personal record and team season best 11:42.06, which also ranks as the 17th fastest time in program history. Senior Mikayla Jackson won the high jump with a best height of 5' 1 1/4" (1.58m). The men won three events at the meet. The 4x100-meter relay team ran a 41.73 second race, sophomore Jake Krause won the 1,500-meter relay with a time of 3:57.11 and sophomore Eli Traeder took first in the 5,000-meter run with a personal record time of 15:16.26. Potter and Madigan also set their personal records in the 1,500-meter run and 800-meter run with times of 3:47.21 and 2:10.24, respectively.

Where the Titans are Competing

The Titans are headed to UW-Whitewater this Friday and Saturday (May 5-6) for the WIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships (Presented by Culver's). The 104th men's meet and 51st women's meet will be held on the Warhawks' Rex Foster Track Complex. The men's team will be looking to defend their title and the women will look to build on their third place finish from last year's meet in La Crosse. With a 174-173 point finish over UW-La Crosse, the men's team broke the Eagles' 30-year championship streak and matched the closest margin of victory in the history of the meet (UWL beat UWO 175-174 in 2011).
