Titans To Perform At WIAC Championship

Alexandria Demco owns the top seed in both the 800- and 1,500-meter runs, Ashton Keene in the 5,000-meter run and Cara Volz in the javelin for UW-Oshkosh at this weekend's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship (presented by Culver's) in La Crosse.

The 50th edition of the championship begins at 1 p.m. Friday (May 6) and 10:30 a.m. Saturday (May 7) at UW-La Crosse's Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans' Memorial Field Sports Complex. The meet will be held in conjunction with the 103rd version of the men's championship.

UW-Oshkosh seeks its 32nd top-three finish in the last 36 conference championships held. The Titans scored 101 points to place fourth at the 2021 championship held in River Falls. It was the most points counted by UW-Oshkosh since it totaled 141 in 2016.

UW-La Crosse scored 276 points at last year's championship to win its ninth straight team title and 35th overall. UW-Eau Claire finished second to the Eagles with 164.5 points while UW-Stevens Point placed third with 106 and UW-Oshkosh fourth. UW-River Falls finished fifth among the eight competing teams with 49.5 points, UW-Stout sixth with 48, UW-Platteville seventh with 45 and UW-Whitewater eighth with 26. 

UW-Oshkosh lists second behind UW-La Crosse with 11 WIAC titles, while UW-Stevens Point has captured one. Former conference member University of Wisconsin has two first-place finishes. UW-Oshkosh captured conference titles in 1988-91, 1994-97, 2004, 2006 and 2011.

This weekend's championship showcases three programs ranked in the Top 24 of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's NCAA Division III Rating Index – top-ranked UW-La Crosse, 14th-ranked UW-Eau Claire and 24th-ranked UW-Platteville.

Demco is the defending WIAC champion in both the 800- and 1,500-meter runs. She is seeded first in the WIAC in the 800-meter run and 22nd in Division III with a time of 2:13.12 from the UW-Whitewater Drake Alternative Meet held April 29. Demco is seeded first in the conference and fourth nationally in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:27.14 from the Drake Relays held April 27.

Keene is seeded first in the WIAC in the 5,000-meter run and 20th in Division III with a time of 16:57.27 from the UW-Platteville Invitational held April 15.

Volz is seeded first in the league in the javelin with a throw of 125-11 from the UW-Whitewater Drake Alternative Meet. She was the winner of the triple jump competition at the 2018 WIAC Championship. 

UW-Oshkosh also has Keene seeded second in the 10,000-meter run, Brenna Masloroff fourth in the hammer throw, Meygan Benzing fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Libby Geisness fifth in the 800-meter run and Riley Kindt fourth in the 100-meter hurdles and fifth in the long jump.

UW-Oshkosh's 400-meter relay team of Andrea Glaz, Molly Greeninger, Kyra Huber and Mikayla Jackson is seeded third.

The top finisher in each event receives all-conference first team status while the runner-up secures second team accolades and the third-place performer honorable mention recognition.
