Titans Aim For WIAC Title

Defending event champions Andrew George in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Steven Potter in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs and Jonathan Wilburn in the triple jump seek repeat titles for UW-Oshkosh at this weekend's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship (presented by Culver's) in La Crosse.

Competition at the 103rd version of the championship begins at 1 p.m. Friday (May 6) and 10:30 a.m. Saturday (May 8) at UW-La Crosse's Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans' Memorial Field Sports Complex. The meet will be held in unison with the 50th chapter of the women's championship.

UW-Oshkosh, a six-time WIAC champion, has finished among the top three teams during eight of the last 11 championships held. The Titans, who scored 122.5 points to place third at the 2021 championship in River Falls, captured conference titles in 1927, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1971 and 1990.

UW-La Crosse scored 185 points at last year's championship to win its 30th straight team title and 56th overall. UW-Whitewater finished second to the Eagles with 130 points, UW-Oshkosh third and UW-Eau Claire fourth with 110.5. UW-Stout placed fifth among the eight competing programs with 106.5 points while UW-Stevens Point finished sixth with 98.5, UW-Platteville seventh with 50 and UW-River Falls eighth with 15.

UW-Oshkosh ranks second behind UW-La Crosse with its six league titles, while UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater own four apiece and UW-Stout one. Former conference member UW-Milwaukee has 34 first-place finishes.

This weekend's championship showcases five programs ranked in the Top 17 of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's NCAA Division III Rating Index – sixth-ranked UW-Eau Claire, 11th-ranked UW-Oshkosh, 12th-ranked UW-La Crosse, 15th-ranked UW-Stout and 17th-ranked UW-Platteville.

George is unseeded in this year's 3,000-meter steeplechase race. He won last year's event with a time of 9:13.60.

Steven Potter is the defending WIAC champion in both the 800- and 1,500-meter runs. He is seeded first in the WIAC in the 800-meter run and 13th in Division III with a time of 1:51.33 from the Drake Relays held April 27. Potter is seeded ninth in the conference in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:00.37 from the UW-Platteville Invitational held April 15.

Wilburn looks for a second consecutive victory in the triple jump at the 2022 conference meet. He is unseeded for this year's competition after winning last year's title with a school-record measurement of 51-5.

In addition to the 800-meter run, UW-Oshkosh also owns the top seed in the 200-meter dash, 400-meter hurdles, triple jump, 400-meter relay and 1,600-meter relay. The Titans won the 1,600-meter relay a year ago.

The top finisher in each event receives all-conference first team status while the runner-up secures second team accolades and the third-place performer honorable mention recognition.
