Grant, Willems Register Historic Sprints At Titan Challenge

UW-Oshkosh's Jaylen Grant registered the fifth- and Davian Willems the 10th-fastest indoor 60-meter dash times in NCAA Division III men's track & field history at the 15-team Titan Challenge Saturday (Feb. 19) in Kolf Sports Center.

Grant defeated 61 other opponents with his winning sprint of 6.72 seconds that broke both the UW-Oshkosh and Kolf Sports Center record of 6.76 seconds that he set earlier in the preliminaries. Grant entered the day leading all of Division III this season with a school-record time of 6.78 seconds that he established at the Ripon College Winter Open on Dec. 4 and tied at the UW-Whitewater Midwest ELITE Invitational on Feb. 12.

UW-Oshkosh went on to score 34 points in the 60-meter dash as Willems followed Grant with a second-place time of 6.74 seconds that ranks second nationally this season. The Titans also had Aaron McCarroll-Richardson finish third with a time of 6.90 seconds, Denzel Thomas fourth at 6.91, Londyn Little sixth at 6.95 and Robert Ogbuli seventh at 6.99. UW-Oshkosh's Joey Kean didn't run in the final after posting a time of 6.84 seconds in the preliminaries that ranks ninth nationally.

UW-Oshkosh, the top-ranked Division III program in this season's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's Indoor Rating Index, totaled 210 points to easily capture Saturday's team title.

Fifth-ranked UW-Eau Claire finished second to the Titans with 91.5 points while 18th-ranked UW-Stout placed third with 76, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 29 and St. Norbert College fifth with 28.

UW-Oshkosh, which has won all six of the invitationals it has competed in this season, scored a large volume of points in the 200-meter dash, long jump and triple jump as well.

The Titans tallied 32 points in the 200-meter dash as Rashaad Henderson finished first with a time of 22.06 seconds, Ogbuli second at 22.10, Little third at 22.15, Willems fifth at 22.21, McCarroll-Richardson sixth at 22.36 and Jaylin Boatman eighth at 22.45. Henderson advanced to 14th nationally in the event following his performance while Ogbuli moved to 18th and Willems to 25th.

In the long jump, UW-Oshkosh's Aden Sears won the event with a leap of 22-4 1/2. The Titans finished the event with 24 points as Payton White placed second with a measurement of 22-2 1/4 and Jamyle Brantley third at 22-1 1/2.

UW-Oshkosh also counted 24 points in the triple jump as Jonathan Wilburn finished first with a distance of 49-5, Leslie Fisher second at 46-11 1/2 and Elijah Pena third at 46-2 3/4. Pena's skip moved him into 27th place on this season's indoor honor roll.

The Titans had three other individual winners – Mitchell Bradford in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:36.12, Andrew George in the mile run with a time of 4:13.14 and Steven Potter in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:27.62. The performance by George ranks 27th in the nation this season.

UW-Oshkosh's remaining victory was in the 1,600-meter relay. The quartet of Henderson, Adrian Girone, Bo Koehn and Ryan Potter combined for a time of 3:17.18 that ranks third nationally this season.

Titan Caleb Cornelius finished second in the high jump with a height of 6-7 while three other teammates placed third in their event – Pena with a time of 50.19 seconds in the 400-meter run, Dwight Hosni with a time of 4:23.31 in the mile run and Aaron Kiela with a time of 8.64 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles.

Also placing fourth for UW-Oshkosh were Sears in the 400-meter run with a time of 50.32 seconds, Andrew Rathkamp with a time of 1:57.89 in the 800-meter run and Eli Tranel with a height of 15-10 in the pole vault.

Other Titans finishing fifth were Girone in the 400-meter run with a time of 50.38 seconds, Noah Bruehl in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.05 and Zachary Zirgibel in the pole vault with a measurement of 14-10 3/4.

UW-Oshkosh's Neal McCourt supplied a sixth-place leap of 6-3 1/4 in the high jump.

The Titans concluded the meet with 33 top eight finishes, including eight that won events. 

A total of 1,015 fans attended the meet.

The Titans were also represented Saturday by Cody Chadwick at the Colorado School of Mines Twilight Meet in Golden, Colo. Chadwick finished sixth among 15 contestants in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:47.78. The non-scoring meet featured the majority of its competitors from Division II programs.

UW-Oshkosh will compete at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship (presented by Culver's) next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 25-26) in Platteville. The five-time WIAC champion Titans finished second with 148.5 points at 2020 championship. Last year's league meet was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
