Titans Capture Midwest ELITE Invitational Title

UW-Oshkosh won three events, including a pair with nation-leading performances, to help capture first place at the nine-team UW-Whitewater Midwest ELITE Men's Track & Field Invitational Saturday (Feb. 12) in Whitewater.

UW-Oshkosh, the top-ranked NCAA Division III program in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's Indoor Rating Index, scored 108.75 points to edge the second-place result of 104.25 points by Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.) and the third-place outcome of 102.25 by 16th-ranked UW-Whitewater.

Other teams finishing in the top five were fourth-place and 19th-ranked UW-La Crosse with 94 points and fifth-place and third-ranked Wartburg College (Iowa) with 53.

Winning events for UW-Oshkosh were Jaylen Grant, Eli Tranel and Jonathan Wilburn.

Grant tied both his own school record and this season's fastest Division III time in the 60-meter dash with his sprint of 6.78 seconds. He defeated 29 other contestants in the race, including UW-La Crosse's Sam Blaskowski who finished second with a time of 6.80 seconds. Grant also completed the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.78 seconds at the Ripon College Winter Open held Dec. 3.

UW-Oshkosh had three other place winners in the 60-meter dash on Saturday as Denzel Thomas finished third with a time of 6.83 seconds, Aaron McCarroll-Richardson sixth at 6.89 and Londyn Little seventh at 6.96. The times recorded by Thomas and McCarroll-Richardson rank sixth and 21st in the country, respectively.

Tranel defeated 14 other entrants in the pole vault with his winning height of 16-3 1/4. UW-La Crosse's Tommy Knoche placed second to Tranel with a measurement of 15-7 1/4 and UW-Oshkosh's Zachary Zirgibel fifth and Mason Chapman eighth with marks of 14-1 3/4 and 12-8, respectively.

Wilburn improved his nation-leading measurement in the triple jump to 49-6 1/4 with his victory over 18 other challengers. The two-time Division III indoor triple jump All-American finished ahead of the second-place distance of 47-5 by UW-Whitewater's Shelvin Garrett and the third-place skip of 47-0 1/4 by UW-Oshkosh's Leslie Fisher.

The Titans also had three place winners in the 400-meter run as Amitai Wheat finished second with a time of 49.83 seconds, Rashaad Henderson third at 49.84 and Bo Koehn sixth at 50.50. The performances etched by Wheat and Henderson rank 21st and 23rd nationally.

UW-Oshkosh's Caleb Cornelius earned the nation's 18th-best height in the high jump with his second-place leap of 6-5. Titan Julien Harden finished sixth in the event with a mark of 6-3 1/4.

The Titans additionally received a third-place time of 22.78 seconds in the 200-meter dash from Payton White, third-place distance of 22-9 in the long jump from Aden Sears and fifth-place performances of 22-5 in the long jump from McCarroll-Richardson, 1:56.49 in the 800-meter run from Ryan Potter and 4:15.02 in the mile run from Steven Potter.

Other UW-Oshkosh competitors finishing seventh were Mitchell Bradford with a time of 14:56.34 in the 5,000-meter run, Jacob Dennison with a measurement of 51-1 3/4 in the 35-pound weight throw and Reid Marquardt with a time of 1:57.03 in the 800-meter run.

Titan Andrew George contributed an eighth-place time of 4:16.68 in the mile run.

UW-Oshkosh, which has won all five of the invitationals it has competed in this season, returns to action Saturday (Feb. 19) by hosting the Titan Challenge in Kolf Sports Center.
