Titans Earn The Victory At Titan Challenge

UW-Oshkosh defeated visiting WIAC rivals UW-Eau Claire and UW-Whitewater to win the 10-team Titan Men's Track & Field Challenge on Saturday (Feb. 17) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh took first with 162.5 points while UW-Eau Claire finished second with 127, UW-Whitewater third with 123.5, Concordia University Wisconsin fourth with 36, Lawrence University fifth with 31 and Saint Mary's University (Minn.) sixth with 26.

The Titans scored 19 of their team points in the 800-meter run and 18 in the pole vault while owning the event winner in the high jump and 60-meter dash.

UW-Oshkosh's Justin Skinkis placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.90, and Titans Nick Freitag and Mitch Pauers third and fourth with efforts of 1:57.31 and 1:58.04, respectively. Grant Marton of Carroll University won the event with a time of 1:55.52.

In the pole vault, UW-Oshkosh's Joe Vils finished second with a height of 15-11 3/4 while Titans Devan Gertschen placed fourth at 15-5 3/4, Zach Emmer sixth at 14-6 and Mitchell Hasey seventh at 14-6. Zach Jasinski of UW-Whitewater took first place in the event with a measurement of 16-9 1/2.

Winning events for UW-Oshkosh were Jordan Boyd in the high jump with a leap of 6-8 1/4 and Robert Ogbuli in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.10.

Boyd defeated 15 other contestants, including Titan Carson Weber, who finished fourth with a height of 6-4 1/4. Ogbuli outran 25 other participants for his victory.

UW-Oshkosh finished second in six other events, including the 1,600-meter relay where Freitag, Skinkis, Christian Lopez and Ryan Powers ran to a time of 3:20.36. UW-Eau Claire won the race with a time of 3:17.65.

Other Titans finishing second were Weber in the long jump with a leap of 21-6 3/4, Cody Chadwick in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:34.76, Michael Juarez in the mile run with a performance of 4:21.86, Erik Schwandt in the 200-meter dash with an effort of 22.65 seconds and Bailey Quinn in the 35-pound weight throw with a distance of 54-7 1/2.

Unattached Matt Cooper and Michael Bilitz won the mile and 5,000-meter runs with times of 4:16.86 and 15:20.78, respectively, while former Titan Pete Delzer threw to a winning mark of 60-5 3/4 in the 35-pound weight throw. Desmond Steward of Saint Mary's University won the long jump with a mark of 22-1 3/4 and UW-Eau Claire's Jordan Lijewski the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.49 seconds.

UW-Oshkosh's two other third-place finishes belonged to Jared Benson and Bennett Krueger. Benson skipped to a measurement of 43-7 1/4 in the triple jump whole Krueger ran to a time of 8:54.98 in the 3,000-meter run.

The Titans' remaining fourth-place listings were Bryce Mancheski's leap of 20-11 1/4 in the long jump and Lucas Weber's time of 4:23.63 in the mile run.

Taking fifth place for UW-Oshkosh were Todd Beadle in the 400-meter run with a time of 51.25 seconds, Brandt Beukema in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.57 seconds and Jacob Rost in the 3,000-meter run at 8:57.89. 

UW-Oshkosh competes at the WIAC Indoor Track & Field Championship next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 23-24) in Stevens Point. The five-time WIAC champion Titans are searching for their first league title since 2001.
