Titans Win Three Events, Place Third In Own Invitational

Nick Freitag, Roberto Lara and Joe Zack won their respective running events as UW-Oshkosh finished third in its own men's track & field invitational held Saturday (Feb. 11) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Stevens Point totaled 184 points to win the six-team meet. UW-Whitewater finished second to the Pointers with 174.5 points while UW-Oshkosh placed third with 124.5, St. Norbert College fourth with 52, UW-La Crosse fifth with 11 and Lawrence University sixth with eight.

UW-Oshkosh earned 17 team points in the 3,000-meter run as Zack finished first with a time of 8:46.11, Bennett Krueger fifth in 9:02.54, Trevor Damkot seventh in 9:08.90 and Daniel Massey eighth in 9:10.55. Brett Harms of UW-Whitewater placed second among the event's 17 runners with a time of 8:48.59.

The Titans also compiled 15 points in the 800-meter run. Freitag won the event with a time of 1:55.59 while Mitch Pauers placed fifth in 1:58.09 and Derrick Rufer eighth in 1:59.06. UW-Stevens Point's Alex Egbert finished second in a field of 29 runners with a time of 1:56.73.

Lara defeated 18 other contestants to win the mile run with his time of 4:11.29. UW-Stevens Point's Matt Stelmasek finished second to Lara with a time of 4:20.52 and UW-Oshkosh's Isaiah Sample fifth in 4:37.82. Lara's performance ranks fifth in the NCAA Division III this season and follows his third-place listing of 4:09.43 established at the UW-Oshkosh Open on Jan. 13.

UW-Oshkosh's Christian Lopez ran to a pair of national top 14 listings by finishing second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.92 seconds and third in the 200-meter dash at 22.33. Lopez now ranks 12th in the country in the 60-meter dash and 14th in the 200-meter dash.

The Titans' Ryan Powers established the nation's 13th-fastest time in the 400-meter run with his second-place performance of 49.36 seconds. UW-Oshkosh also had Danny Trimner finish sixth in the event with a time of 50.76 seconds and Jacob Isaac eighth in 51.12.

UW-Oshkosh recorded three top-eight finishes in the pole vault as Devan Gertschen placed second with a height of 15-7 1/4, Matt McMullen sixth at 14-7 1/2 and Joe Vils eighth at 14-7 1/2.

The Titans' Garrison Griest placed third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.48 seconds and fourth in the 200-meter dash at 22.45 while Jared Benson and Carson Weber both finished fourth with measurements of 40-11 3/4 in the triple jump and 6-2 3/4 in the high jump, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh's other fifth-place performances were achieved with leaps of 21-2 3/4 in the long jump by Hunter Effa and 6-2 3/4 in the high jump by Dakota Griffith.

The Titans' remaining sixth-place results belonged to Weber with a distance of 21-2 in the long jump, Nolan Peterson with a time of 7.14 seconds in the 60-meter dash and Bailey Quinn with a measurement of 49-11 3/4 in the 35-pound weight throw.

UW-Oshkosh closed out its top-eight listings with the eighth-place times of 7.16 seconds by Josh Jennerjohn in the 60-meter dash and 16:16.33 in the 5,000-meter run by Skyler Yunk.

UW-Oshkosh hosts its annual Titan Challenge on Saturday (Feb. 18) in Kolf Sports Center.
