Titans Finish Third At WIAC Outdoor Championship

Jordan Carpenter and Roberto Lara were event champions as UW-Oshkosh finished third at the WIAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship held Friday and Saturday (May 6-7) in Whitewater.

Carpenter defeated 22 other competitors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with his time of 9:10.19 while Lara ousted 17 other participants in the 1,500-meter run with his performance of 3:54.95. Carpenter also placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run with an effort of 15:02.43.

UW-Oshkosh's remaining first-place finish came in the 1,600-meter relay, where the quartet of Kallen Bentz, Garrison Griest, Ryan Powers and Danny Trimner ran to a time of 3:13.24.

UW-La Crosse scored 201 points to easily capture its 26th straight WIAC title and 52nd overall. The Eagles owned four event winners, including Ernest Winters who won both the 100- and 200-meter sprints.

UW-Whitewater finished second to the Eagles with 141.5 points while UW-Oshkosh placed third with 130, UW-Platteville fourth with 116 and UW-Stevens Point fifth with 80. UW-Oshkosh ranked sixth at last year's championship with 80.33 points.

Completing this year's team standings were sixth-place UW-Eau Claire with 76 points, seventh-place UW-Stout with 56 and eighth-place UW-River Falls with 17.5.

UW-Oshkosh scored 21 of its overall team points in the 400-meter hurdles. The Titans had Trimner finish second in the event with a time of 53.46 seconds, Griest third in 54.09, Morgan Malm fourth in 54.56 and Tyler Brown seventh in 57.06.

Naji Allan contributed a pair of top-four finishes with his third-place time of 10.68 seconds in the 100-meter dash and fourth-place performance of 21.76 seconds in the 200-meter dash. He also joined Powers, Christian Lopez and Nolan Peterson in recording a second-place time of 41.47 seconds in the 400-meter relay.

In addition to Carpenter, UW-Oshkosh also had two other place winners in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as Mitch Pauers finished sixth in 9:34.55 and Charlend Howard eighth in 9:41.82.

The Titans benefited from three place winners in the 10,000-meter run as Tyler Miletti finished second in 32:40.04, Brian McKnight fifth in 32:53.85 and Ryne Scopp seventh in 33:06.87.

Other third-place finishes went to UW-Oshkosh's Powers in the 400-meter run with a time of 47.98 seconds, Zachary Baehman in the shot put with a distance of 55-5 3/4 and Devan Gertschen in the pole vault with a height of 15-11 1/4.

Additional sixth-place finishes belonged to the Titans' Bentz in the 400-meter run with a time of 49.17 seconds, Lopez in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.10 seconds, Nick Freitag in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.41 and Ryan Paulick in the shot put with a measurement of 48-10.

UW-Oshkosh concluded its list of place winners at this year's championship with the seventh-place performances of Lopez and Carson Weber and the eighth-place efforts of Hunter Effa, Kevin Caufield and Dakota Griffith. Lopez ran to a time of 10.78 seconds in the 100-meter dash, while Weber and Griffith leaped to heights of 6-4 and 6-2 in the high jump, respectively. Caufield tallied 5,597 points in the decathlon and Effa a distance of 21-10 3/4 in the long jump.

Winters was named the championship's top track performer while Alex Mess of UW-Eau Claire was selected as the meet's top field performer. UW-La Crosse's Josh Buchholtz was chosen as the league's outdoor Coach of the Year.

UW-Oshkosh athletes will compete in a variety of last chance qualifying meets over the next two weeks before participating at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship on May 26-28 in Waverly, Iowa.
