Titans Earn Second Place At WIAC Outdoor Championship

McKena Ramos won races at 800 and 1,500 meters as UW-Oshkosh finished second at the WIAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship held Friday and Saturday (May 2-3) at the Oshkosh Sports Complex.

Ramos, a freshman, took first place in Saturday's 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:00.75. Ninety minutes following that race, Ramos posted a winning time of 1:52.69 in the 800-meter run.

Ramos also ran on UW-Oshkosh's first-place 3,200-meter relay team. The quartet of Ramos, Brett DeNure, Sean Kutz and Matt Lawrence established an Oshkosh Sports Complex record with their time of 7:41.70.

The Titans won four other events, including the 400-meter hurdles where Corey Wilch captured his third straight title. Wilch completed the race in a time of 52.42.

Wilch was also a member of UW-Oshkosh's first-place 1,600-meter relay team. The group of Wilch, Brian Beaudo, Mike Servais and Reid Zanoya marked a time of 3:18.25 to win the event for the second straight year.

UW-Oshkosh's remaining victory belonged to Joe Brunner in the hammer throw. Brunner earned the Titans' fourth straight title in the event with a distance of 197-1.

Assisted by its six first-place efforts, UW-Oshkosh finished second in the team standings with 163 points. The performance marked the Titans fifth consecutive second-place finish.

UW-La Crosse compiled 215 points to capture its 24th straight title and 50th overall. UW-Whitewater finished third in the nine-team meet with 109 points, while UW-Eau Claire placed fourth with 102, UW-Platteville fifth with 79, UW-Stout sixth with 75, UW-Stevens Point seventh with 69, UW-River Falls eighth with 31 and UW-Superior ninth with 15.

Finishing second for the Titans were Kutz in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:05.25, Jonathan Jordan in the long jump with a distance of 23-5 1/2 and Zachary Baehman in the shot put with a measurement of 54-4.

UW-Oshkosh had six third-place listings, three on the track and three in the field.

Beaudo ran to a time of 49.03 in the 400-meter run, while Wilch marked an effort of 14.62 in the 110-meter hurdles and Jordan Carpenter a performance of 9:21.73 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Jeremy Brandt recorded a distance of 53-5 1/2 in the shot put, John McCann a leap of 6-6 3/4 in the high jump and Kyle Schueller a measurement of 46-4 1/4 in the triple jump.

A trio of fourth-place finishes went to UW-Oshkosh's DeNure in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.20, Naji Allan in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.66 and Mike Heinz in the discus with a cast of 158-5.

Placing fifth for the Titans were Lawrence in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.21 and Scott Heinz in the discus with a flight of 157-1.

Servais contributed a pair of sixth-place finishes by sprinting to times of 22.20 in the 200-meter dash and 49.58 in the 400-meter run. The Titans also had Nick Grosskopf and Mike Heinz finish sixth with their measurements of 51-7 3/4 in the shot put and 168-4 in the hammer throw, respectively.

Seventh-place efforts went to UW-Oshkosh's Schueller in the long jump with a leap of 22-0 3/4 and Scott Heinz with a distance of 164-7 in the hammer throw.

UW-Oshkosh wrapped up its scoring with the eighth-place performances of Allan in the 200-meter dash, Zanoya in the 400-meter run, Dan Trimner in the 400-meter hurdles and the 400-meter relay team.

Allan ran to a time of 22.30, while Zanoya and Trimner completed their events in times of 49.73 and 55.24, respectively. Members of the 400-meter relay squad that posted a time of 43.37 were Beaudo, Zanoya, Ryan Gregory and Brian Huebner.

UW-Stout's Zach Anderson received the WIAC's Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.

UW-Oshkosh athletes will compete in a variety of last chance meets before participating at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship on May 22-24 in Delaware, Ohio.
