Titans Qualify Two Wrestlers For NCAA Championship
Nazar Kulchytskyy (Jr. • Sosnivka, Ukraine) and Dan Schiferl (Jr. • Stoughton) will represent UW-Oshkosh at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship for the second straight year following their first-place finishes at the West Regional Tournament held Saturday (March 2) in Minneapolis, Minn.
Schiferl was named the meet's Most Outstanding Wrestler after pinning all three of his 174-pound opponents. Kulchytskyy easily went unbeaten in three contests to capture the 165-pound title.
Schiferl won his weight class with a pin of St. Olaf College's (Minn.) James Roach in 54 seconds. He previously stuck Wes Colton of Lakeland College to the mat in 4:02 and Josh Kohler of Augsburg College (Minn.) in 1:52. Schiferl (20-4) finished ninth at last year's NCAA Division III Championship.
Kulchytskyy captured his weight division with a 20-5 victory over Nicholas Schuler of St. John's University (Minn.). He earlier pinned Alex Evan of St. Olaf College in 1:41 and defeated Justin Bowland of Augsburg College, 22-8. Kulchytskyy (40-1) won the 157-pound title at last year's NCAA Division III Championship.
UW-Oshkosh had three other place winners as Tyler Wetenkamp (So. • Manitowoc) finished fourth at 197 pounds, Brandon Clapper (So. • Plainfield) fifth at 285 and Jay Howarth (So. • Coleman) sixth at 184.
Wetenkamp went 3-2 in the tournament, including pins in 3:36 of UW-Platteville's Abe Graziano and 4:11 of Concordia University Wisconsin's Jake Reuteler. Wetenkamp lost an 8-3 decision to Ryan Michaelis of St. John's University in the third-place match.
Clapper posted a 2-2 record, including a pin in 1:16 of Lakeland College's Andy Crivellone. Clapper took fifth place with a 3-1 victory over UW-Platteville's Josh Dust.
Howarth tallied a 2-3 record, including pins in 6:24 of UW-Platteville's LaQuan Hightower and 6:38 of Lakeland College's Eddie Terres. Howarth suffered a 16-1 loss to Conordia College's (Minn.) Christian Harrison in the fifth-place contest.
The Titans also had Parker Peterson (Jr. • Eden) go 0-2 at 125 pounds, David Rosenau (Sr. • Van Dyne) 0-2 at 133, Justin Schienebeck (Sr. • Butternut) 1-2 at 141, Mason McMullen (Jr. • Milwaukee) 1-2 at 149 and Tom Dahlke (So. • Shiocton) 1-2 at 157. Dahlke had the lone pin in the group as he glued Milwaukee School of Engineering's Cory Miklas to the surface in 1:35.
Augsburg College scored 143.5 points to claim the team title. Concordia College finished second in the 12-team meet with 133 points, while St. John's University placed third with 127, UW-Oshkosh fourth with 79 and St. Olaf College fifth with 72.
The 2013 NCAA Division III Championship will be held March 15-16 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
