Five Gymnasts To Compete At NCGA Championship
UW-Oshkosh has qualified five women for the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championship that will be held March 22-23 in Whitewater.
The gymnasts earned an invitation based on their performance throughout the season and at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship/NCGA West Regional held March 9 in Oshkosh.
Leane Blais (So. • Salisbury, N.C.) will compete for the Titans on both the balance beam and uneven bars. She took first place on the balance beam with a score of 9.625 and second on the uneven bars with a mark of 9.50 at the WIAC Championship/NCGA West Regional. Blais ranks 11th nationally on the uneven bars and 52nd on the balance beam with average scores of 9.481 and 9.106, respectively.
Stephanie Gorman (Jr. • Belvidere, Ill.), Elizabeth Kiel (Fr. • Union Grove), Krystal Walker (Fr. • Chicago, Ill.) and Abby Zubella (Sr. • Appleton) will also represent UW-Oshkosh at the national meet.
Gorman will compete on the vault. She scored 9.35 points to finish 14th at the WIAC Championship/NCGA West Regional. Gorman's average score of 9.35 on the apparatus ranks 47th in the country.
Kiel will participate on the uneven bars. She placed 12th with a value of 9.10 at the WIAC Championship/NCGA West Regional. Kiel's average score of 8.965 ranks 60th in the nation.
Walker secured a spot in the all-around competition. She totaled 36.80 points to finish third at the WIAC Championship/NCGA West Regional. Walker ranks eighth in the country with an average score of 37.119.
Zubella qualified in the floor exercise, an event that she posted a 17th-place score of 9.65 at the WIAC Championship/NCGA West Regional. The 19th-ranked Zubella owns a season average score of 9.569.
The NCGA Championship will include five UW-Oshkosh competitors for the second straight year. Blais participated on the uneven bars and Zubella in the floor exercise at last year's meet.
UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater will represent the WIAC/NCGA West Region in the team competition. UW-Oshkosh captured NCGA titles in 1989 and 2007.
