Pointers Eliminate Titans From WIAC Tournament

UW-Stevens Point began the second half with a 22-6 scoring run to eliminate UW-Oshkosh from the WIAC Women's Basketball Tournament on Friday (Feb. 22) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Pointers (22-5) won the contest, 59-50, to advance to Sunday's (Feb. 24) championship game at regular-season champion UW-Whitewater. UW-Oshkosh (20-6) hopes to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship on Monday (Feb. 25).

For the first 18 minutes, UW-Oshkosh was in control. Ashley Winterfeldt (Sr. • Hortonville) cut backdoor for a lay-up that put the Titans ahead, 7-2. Katie Kitzke (Sr. • South Milwaukee) then drained a three-pointer with the shot clock winding down to give the Titans an 11-8 lead.

Down 15-10, Sam Barber made a three-pointer and two free throws as UW-Stevens Point made its charge. Liz Althoff and Brooke Allen then made consecutive triples to push the Pointers in front, 24-23. The teams went to intermission tied at 26.

UW-Stevens Point stepped up its defense in the second half and the result was 2-of-18 shooting by UW-Oshkosh to open the period. The Pointers scored 22-of-28 points to begin the second half and take a 48-32 lead with 6:19 to play.

A three-point play from Megan Wenig (Sr. • Oshkosh) highlighted the Titans' 9-0 run that tightened the contest. Ashley Neustifter (Fr. • Oshkosh) cut the deficit to 48-41 with four minutes left, but UW-Oshkosh couldn't get any closer than six points (51-45).

Althoff made all three of her long-range attempts to finish with a season-best 21 points. Myranda Tyler added 19 points and seven rebounds for the Pointers, who committed just six turnovers. Alyssa Olp dished out seven assists, while Allen notched five steals.

UW-Stevens Point shot 37 percent (20-54) from the field and 72 percent (13-18) from the free throw line. The Pointers made 6-of-13 three-point shots (46 percent) while losing the rebounding battle, 46-29.

Wenig scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds for UW-Oshkosh. The Titans also received 17 points from Kitzke and 11 rebounds each from Katelyn Kuehl (So. • Fond du Lac) and Sarah Stecker (Jr. • Menasha).

UW-Oshkosh shot 32 percent (19-59) from the field, 67 percent (6-9) from the foul line and 27 percent (6-22) beyond the arc. The Titans, who were hosting their first WIAC Tournament game since 2006, were hampered by 16 turnovers.
