No. 24 Titans Split Games on Final Day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fl.—It was a split day for the No. 24 UW-Oshkosh Titans (17-1) softball squad concluded their Florida trip. The Titans defeated Colby College 10-2 in six innings before going extra innings against No. 13 Tufts University. The Titans would fall to Tufts 4-2 on a 3-run home run in the ninth inning.

Colby Recap

The Titans took control of the game early, scoring five runs in the first three innings. Haylie Wittman singled in the bottom of the second (RBI) to bring home Morgan Rau for the first run of the day. Abby Garceau doubled the Titans lead in the second with an RBI single as Gabby Buikema put the Titans up 2-0.

Wittman hit a sacrifice fly RBI as Rau scored the third run for the Titans. Ana Iliopoulos had a 2 RBI single as Buikema and Zoe Malone scored for the Titans. In the fourth inning, Malone hit an RBI single as Sophie Wery scored the sixth run of the day.

Colby scored two runs in the in the fifth on a 2 RBI double in the fifth inning.

Hannah Ritter hit an RBI single in the fifth to bring home Wittman for her first day. Wery hit a sacrifice fly as Lizzie Slobodecki scored the eighth run of the day. In the sixth inning, Morgan Miller was involved in both scoring plays for the Titans. Miller hit a triple as Sydney Rau scored for the Titans. Brianna Davis reached first on an error as Miller scored the game-winning run. 

In the circle for the Titans, Sydney Nemetz went five innings and struck out two batters. Abby Freismuth had one inning in the circle and recorded two strikeouts.

Tufts Recap

It was a battle of the defenses as the No. 24 Titans and No. 13 Jumbos of Tufts faced off. Prior to the game, the Titans led the nation in ERA at .63 while Tufts led the nation in batting average at .419.

Tufts grabbed the first run of the day in the first inning, scoring on an RBI single.

Iliopoulos singled down the right-field line for an RBI as Buikema scored and tied the game at one in the seventh inning. Heading into the ninth inning, Buikema hit a sacrifice fly to right field as Morgan Rau scored for the Titans.

A 3-run home run from Tufts ended the game in the bottom of the ninth as the Titans were handed the first loss of the season.

In the pitcher's circle for the Titans, Maddie Fink went 8.1 innings and struck out five batters.

The Titans will travel to St. Norbert College on March 29 for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in De Pere, Wisconsin.
