Wery Drives Titans Past Buffalo State; Titans Hold Off No. 20 Millikin

CLERMONT, Fl.—Recording 21 hits over two games, the UW-Oshkosh Titans defeated Buffalo State College and nationally ranked Millikin Universtiy at the 2023 Spring Games.

Sophie Wery went two-of-three at the plate, hit a home run, and drove in six runs as the Titans posted an 11-2 victory over the Buffalo State College Bengals in the first game of the day. The Titans were led by Abby Garceau (three-of-four, two runs, RBI) and Wery (two-of-four, two runs, RBI) as the Titans defeated No. 20 Millikin University 6-1. 

As of March 16, the Titans were one of 11 undefeated teams in the nation.

Buffalo State Recap

Wery got things started early for the Titans in the first inning, hitting a three-run home run as Hannah Ritter and Garceau scored on the hit. The Titans loaded the bases late in the inning as Ana Iliopoulos had an RBI single to bring home Morgan Rau.

Wery was at the center of the Titans scoring in the second inning, with a double to left-center field. Wery brought home Ritter and Buikema as the Titans took a 6-0 lead with no outs in the inning. Brianna Davis brought home Wery on an RBI single before stealing second base herself.

In the third inning, Wery reached base on a fielder's choice as Buikema scored the eighth run of the day for the Titans. Lizzie Slobodecki recorded a hit in the fourth inning as Zoe Malone scored for the Titans. The Titans added two more runs in the fifth inning as Emily Rivero and Rau scored for the Titans.

The Bengals of Buffalo State scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, as the Titans allowed four hits from the Bengals.  

Sydney Nemetz took care of business inside the pitchers' circle, allowing two hits and grabbing one strikeout in four innings. Nemetz has a .82 ERA through six games. 

Millikin University Recap

Ritter doubled to left-center field for an RBI as Garceau score the first run for the Titans. Wery crossed the plate in the first inning as Rau reached base on an error by Millikin.

After recording two early outs in the fifth inning, Wery singled up the middle of the field to bring home Garceau. At bat for the Titans next, Rau doubled to right-center field as Wery and Caitlin Williams put the Titans up by five.

Millikin put an end to the Titans shutout, scoring one run in the sixth inning. The sixth inning would be kind to Millikin as the recorded four of their ten hits during the inning.

Stepping up to bat for the Titans, Iliopoulos singled for the Titans to start the inning. Garceau brought Iliopoulos home on a single on the right side.

Fink pitched her fourth complete game of the season, recorded three strikeouts, allowed just one run, and issued one walk. Fink leads the Titans with an ERA of .34.
