Titans Advance to Second Round of Tournament; Peterson Passes Flynn in Games Played

OSHKOSH, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team is advancing to the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament after defeating Fontbonne University (Mo.) on Friday. 

They will face Hope College (Mich.) on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. in the Second Round. Oshkosh faced Hope in their third game of the year on November 12, winning 67-56 in Holland. 

First Half Summary

Sophomore Jonah Rindfleisch scored the first points of the game, sinking a three from senior guard Hunter Plamann. Plamann followed with a three of his own to increase the Titans' lead to 6-0. Oshkosh and Fontbonne traded points until seven-straight from Oshkosh gave them a nine-point lead with 13:04 to play in the first half. Senior guard Quinn Steckbauer brought the Oshkosh faithful to their feet, just beating the shot clock with a three, making the score 24-17. Oshkosh later scored nine straight, ending with a score of 33-19 with 6:03 remaining. After 20 minutes, Oshkosh led the Griffins 45-27. 

First Half Leaders

The Titans shot 48.6 percent (17-of-35) from the field, 37.5 percent (six-of-16) from three and 71.4 percent (five-of-seven) from the line. Borchert led all scorers with 10 points, going five-of-seven from the field. He also recorded 12 rebounds (three offensive). The first half double-double was the 40th in his career.

The Griffins shot 38.2 percent (13-of-34) from the field, 12.5 percent (one-of-eight) from three and zero percent (zero-of-three) from the line. Junior guard Brent Wagner paced Fontbonne with nine points, going four-of-eight from the field and one-of-two from three. Senior guard Elijah Rice recorded four rebounds (two offensive). 

Second Half Summary

The first time either team scored more than five point was when Oshkosh scored nine over two minutes. The Griffins interrupted with a jump shot to make the score 72-45, followed by a crowd-raising dunk from Rindfleisch. The teams traded points the rest of the way, with the final score sitting at 86-58.

Full Game Summary

Oshkosh went 47.6 percent (30-of-63) from the field, 42.9 percent (12-of-28) from three and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the line over the whole game. The Titans outrebounded the Griffins 47 to 29. Plamann led all scorers with 13 points, going four-of-seven from the field, three-of-six from three and two-of-two from the line. Borchert (12), Rindfleisch (11) and senior guard Will Mahoney (11) all scored double digits as well. Borchert finished the game with 15 rebounds (three offensive). Junior guard Reed Gunnink set a career-high with four rebounds and freshman guard Carter Thomas set a season-high three defensive rebounds. The Titans are now 22-6 this season.

Fontbonne finished shooting 36.1 percent (26-of-72) from the field, 11.1 percent (two-of-18) from three and 66.7 percent (four-of-six) from the line. Wagner ended with 11 points going four-of-12 from the field, one-of-five from three and two-of-two from the line. Rice and sophomore center Cheikh Thiam each recorded six rebounds. The Griffins finished their season with a 16-12 record.

Looking Forward

The Titans will return to action on Saturday in their Second Round matchup against Hope at 7:05 p.m. The Flying Dutchmen won their First Round matchup against Bethany Lutheran College (Minn.) 79-65. Senior guard Clayton Dykhouse scored 26 points going 11-of-15 from the field and four-of-seven from three.

Tickets for adults are $15. Tickets for non-UWO students, senior citizens (65+) and children are $10. Children under the age of two get in free. UW-Oshkosh is not able to accept credit cards at this time, but the ticket window will open at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday to accept cash transactions.

Peterson is the new all-time games played leader with 123 games played. He passed Jack Flynn (2017-20) on Friday.
