Titans Drop Overtime Game at Ripon

RIPON, Wis.- The No. 11 nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team fell to the Ripon College (Wis.) Red Hawks on Saturday afternoon in their second overtime game of the 2022-23 season. The Titans now sit at 7-3 (2-0 WIAC).

First Half Summary

Levi Borchert started the scoring with the first basket of the game, making a layup after 19 seconds of play. Ripon scored seven straight points after he scored, with David DeValk scoring four of those points. The Titans ended Ripon's run with a nine-point run of their own to take an 11-7 lead with 15:32 left in the first half. Hunter Plamann led the Titans with two three-pointers in the run. Besides a seven-point run by the Red Hawks between 5:13 and 3:16 remaining, the teams largely traded points through the end of the half. Oshkosh ended the first half trailing Ripon 33-30.

First Half Leaders

Oshkosh went 59.1 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from three and 33.3 percent from the line in the first half. Borchert led all scorers with 11 points, going five-of-six from the field and one-of-two from the line. Plamann was the only other scorer with double-digit points (10). Eric Peterson led the Titans with five rebounds (two offensive) and two assists. Jonah Rindfleisch recorded a season-high four steals. 

Ripon shot 53.1 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from three, shooting no free throws in the half. Jaylen Mahone led the Red Hawks with 10 points, going five-of-six from the field. Owen Theune recorded a team-high four rebounds and William Ryan recorded four steals. 

Second Half Summary

The Red Hawks kept scoring right away in the second half with a Mahone jumper at 19:10. When Cole Booth made both of his free throws with 16:35 remaining, Oshkosh pulled back within five points to make the score 41-36, but seven-straight points from Ripon increased the deficit to 12 points after five minutes of play. The Red Hawks kept a double-digit lead until a seven-point run started by a Plamann steal and two made free throws made the score 53-45. Oshkosh forced a Ripon timeout with 10:09 left in regulation. Plamann finished another Oshkosh seven-point run to pull the Titans within five points with 4:05 left in the half. Quinn Steckbauer made two free throws with 1:30 remaining to keep the Oshkosh run going, and Plamann made his third three of the day to tie the game with 45 seconds left. Booth pulled down a defensive rebound with eight seconds left in regulation and attempted a three six seconds later, but it didn't go in, sending the Titans to their second overtime game of the season.

Second Half Leaders

The Titans shot 37.0 percent from the field, 22.2 percent from three and 77.8 percent from the line in the second half. The Red Hawks went 48.0 percent from the field and 25.0 percent from three, not shooting any free throws in the second half either. There were nine lead changes in the half, the largest lead Oshkosh had was five points and the largest Ripon had was seven points. 

Overtime Summary

Plamann kicked off scoring in overtime, making a free throw 37 seconds into the additional time. The teams traded points and leads until Ripon scored four to take a 67-64 lead with 33 seconds left in the game. Neither team scored the rest of the way, with the final score sitting at 67-64.

Full Game Summary

The Titans went 43.6 percent from the field, 20.0 percent from three and 63.2 percent from the line through the entire game. Plamann led Oshkosh with 22 points, going seven-of-15 from the field, three-of-nine from three and five-of-seven from the line himself. Borchert finished the game with 18 points and a team leading eight rebounds (one offensive). Peterson finished the game with three assists. 

The Red Hawks finished the game shooting 47.5 percent from the field, 36.8 percent from three and 66.7 percent from the line. DeValk led Ripon with 14 points, going seven-of-11 from the field. Theune finished with seven rebounds and Ryan grabbed four steals. 

Looking Forward

The Titans play next at St. Norbert College (Wis.) on Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. The Green Knights have started the season 5-3 (4-1 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference).

Watching Records

Borchert's 18 points against the Red Hawks brought him within six points of becoming the 37th player in school history to reach the 1,000-career point milestone. The last Titan to reach 1,000 points was Adam Fravert in 2020.
