Fast Start Leads Titans To Rout Of Warhawks

Eddie Muench had a game-high 25 points and Levi Borchert added a double-double as the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team scored the first 10 points of the game and never trailed on the way to a 78-59 victory at UW-Whitewater on Friday (Feb. 12).

UW-Oshkosh's game-opening scoring run was bookended by 3-pointers from Eric Peterson and Will Mahoney around a pair of Muench layups. The Titans, who led by as many as 23 points late in the second half, owned a double-digit cushion for the final 33:05 of the game.

The defending Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament champion Titans have won each of the last six meetings with UW-Whitewater and eight of the past nine. UW-Oshkosh (2-1, 2-1 WIAC), ranked 12th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, remains a half game back of 11th-ranked UW-Platteville (3-1, 3-1) with two WIAC East Division contests left.

Muench finished the game shooting 11 of 16 from the field, including 3-for-6 from 3-point range, en route to pacing the Titans in scoring for the second time this season.

Borchert produced his second straight and sixth career double-double with 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor and 12 rebounds to go along with a career high-tying five assists and the team's lone block.

Hunter Plamann added 15 points for the Titans, who also received eight points and 10 rebounds from Peterson. Mahoney and Quinn Steckbauer chipped in seven and six points, respectively, for UW-Oshkosh.

UW-Oshkosh shot 68 percent (17-25) from the field during the second half and concluded the contest 31 of 58 (53.4 percent) from the floor, 10 of 19 (52.6 percent) from 3-point range and 6-for-8 (75 percent) at the free throw line. The Titans held considerable advantages of 39-27 in rebounds and 12-4 in assists.

UW-Whitewater was held to 41 percent (25-61) shooting from the floor, 0 percent (0-15) from beyond the 3-point arc and 64.3 percent (9-14) at the foul line. The Warhawks had edges of 7-14 in turnovers, 8-3 in steals and 2-1 in blocks after entering the night leading the WIAC in scoring (79.5), field goal percentage (.611) and average rebounding margin (+8.0). In its previous game – a 91-78 win at UW-Stevens Point on Feb. 5 – UW-Whitewater shot 70.2 percent from the floor and 73.7 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.

Jack Brahm led the Warhawks with 14 points off the bench while Gage Malensek, the WIAC leader at 26.5 points and 5.5 assists per game entering Friday, had 12 points on 6-for-14 shooting from the floor and zero assists.

UW-Oshkosh built leads of 20-5 and 27-10 with 6:44 left in the first half before heading into intermission with a 33-20 advantage.

The Titans opened the second half by shooting 6-for-8 from the field to extend their lead to 49-32. UW-Oshkosh then made five straight layups during a span of just over two minutes for a 66-44 cushion with 9:16 to play and held its largest lead at 78-55 following a Plamann 3-pointer at the 2:21 mark.

UW-Whitewater has not won a home game over UW-Oshkosh since a 70-61 decision Feb. 17, 2016.

The first game of the 2021 series between the Titans and Warhawks, scheduled for Wednesday (Feb. 10) in Oshkosh, was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.

UW-Oshkosh travels to UW-Stevens Point (1-3, 1-3 WIAC) on Wednesday (Feb. 17).
