Seven Titans Earn All-WIAC Honors, Surane Named Scholar-Athlete
MADISON, Wis.- With the WIAC Tournament wrapped up, seven UW-Oshkosh baseball student-athletes earned All-WIAC honors as the conference office announced its annual list on Tuesday (May 14).
Jake Surane (Sr. • Lincolnshire, Ill.) headlined the Titans with his third All-WIAC nod and the league's Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete. He finished the season batting .369 (65-for-179) with 65 hits (fifth most in the league), 15 doubles (fourth most), two triples (second most), seven home runs and 38 RBIs for a .597 slugging percentage. He also walked 10 times and was hit by four pitches with just 31 strikeouts for a .411 on-base percentage. Surane attempted to steal a base 21 times with 18 successful tries.
Connor Brinkman (Jr. • New London) made his third appearance on the All-WIAC list on Tuesday. He was the 2022 Kwik Trip Newcomer of the Year and a member of the 2023 All-WIAC Team. This season, he went 5-3 in a WIAC leading 11 starts and four complete games. He struck out 67 batters (fourth most in the WIAC) and allowed 44 earned runs in a league best 73.1 innings pitched.
LJ Waco (Sr. • Cary, Ill.) made his second straight All-WIAC Team by compiling a 2.89 ERA in 62.1 innings, the second lowest among WIAC pitchers. In his nine starts, he went 5-3 with three complete games, 20 earned runs allowed, 79 strikeouts, just three home runs while holding opponents to a .207 batting average. He also picked up a save in his only relief appearance of the season.
After earning places on the 2023 All-WIAC Honorable Mention Team, Mason Kirchberg (Jr. • DeForest) and Nick Shiu (Jr. • Gurnee, Ill.) both earned spots on the All-WIAC Team. Kirchberg hit a team leading 13 home runs, which sits fourth in the conference and led the Titans with 47 RBIs, a .665 slugging percentage and a 1.051 on-base plus slugging. Shiu recorded the second highest batting average in the WIAC this season at .417 (53-for-127). He also ranked second with 14 hit by pitches and a .513 on-base percentage.
UW-Oshkosh also had a first-time member of the All-WIAC celebration in Connor Walters (So. • Libertyville, Ill.). Walters went 4-3 in eight starts for the Titans, totaling 46.2 innings with three complete games. He walked just seven batters across the season while striking out 30.
Jack McNamara (So. • La Grange, Ill.) was UW-Oshkosh's representative on the All-Sportsmanship Team. Behind the plate, he was one of two players in the league with a perfect fielding percentage and 32 walks. He hit .257 with nine doubles, a triple, and a home run, 19 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.
UW-Whitewater swept the remaining major awards with Matt Scolan as the Kwik Trip Position Player of the Year, Michael Hiliker Jr. as the Kwik Trip Pitcher of the Year, Jack Hagen as the Kwik Trip Newcomer of the Year and John Vodenlich as the Kwik Trip Coach of the Year.
