Ninth Inning Comeback Falls Short For Titans

KENOSHA, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh baseball team scored two runs on four hits in the top of the ninth inning and had the bases loaded before being defeated 12-10 by Carthage College in Kenosha on Wednesday (April 24).

The Titans (16-14, 9-7 WIAC) notched 16 hits and walked eight times, however they also stranded 14 runners while the Firebirds (21-10, 8-6 CCIW) left just four on base with 14 hits and five walks.

Jake Surane (Sr. • Lincolnshire, Ill.) knocked in UW-Oshkosh's first two runs with a double down the right field line in the top of the first. Brenden Max (So. • Libertyville, Ill.) and Jack McNamara (So. • La Grange, Ill.) scored after hitting a single and double as the leadoff batters. Another Titan run scored as Mason Kirchberg (Jr. • DeForest) grounded out to third base.

Oshkosh starting pitcher Josh Jansen (So. • DeForest) finished 1.1 innings with a strikeout while allowing three runs on four hits and a walk. He allowed a run on back-to-back singles before Aidan Trusky (So. • Antioch, Ill.) came in as relief.

Trusky allowed six runs on four hits and two walks with a strikeout and was assigned the loss (1-3).

In the third and fourth innings, Oshkosh scored additional runs when Kirchberg hit a solo home run and a sacrifice fly to right field to make the score 6-3.

The Firebirds claimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when they scored six runs in four at-bats. They recorded runs on a double, a walk, a 2-RBI single and another single.

Nick Shiu (Jr. • Gurnee, Ill.) brought Oshkosh closer to Carthage in the top of the fifth, sending Max and Carter Stebane (Jr. • Brillion) across the plate on 2-RBI single that cut the deficit to one run. The Firebirds added four runs in the bottom of the inning however, keeping Oshkosh at bay.

The game was scoreless until the ninth inning when the Titans loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning. Shiu notched his third RBI of the day with a single up the middle and Zach Taylor (Sr. • Long Grove) scored Max in the next at-bat after taking four balls. Kirchberg struck out swinging for the third out, leaving the bases loaded and Oshkosh down by two runs.
