Titans, Pointers Swap Victories In Weekday Twinbill

OSHKOSH, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh baseball team split Wednesday's (April 10) doubleheader with UW-Stevens Point on Tiedemann Field at Alumni Stadium with a 7-1 win and a 14-2 loss.

The Titans moved to 12-10 overall and 6-4 in league play while the No. 24 nationally ranked Pointers moved to 12-5 and 4-1.

Brett Gaynor (Fr. • Long Grove, Ill.) earned his first career start in the series opener due to the short rest the team had after finishing up its trip to Whitewater on Monday (April 8). He threw 7.0 innings and struck out eight batters, allowing one run on six hits and two walks for the win.

The first inning went down in order for both teams and neither scored in the second before Oshkosh gained an early lead in the third. Jake Surane (Sr. • Lincolnshire, Ill.) doubled to center field and Jack McNamara (So. • La Grange, Ill.) sent him home in the next at-bat on a single up the middle of the infield. Following McNamara was Zach Taylor (Sr. • Long Grove, Ill.), who singled to left to put runners on first and second. Mason Kirchberg (Jr. • DeForest) then doubled to center to plate both runners for a 3-0 lead. Nick Shiu (Jr. • Gurnee, Ill.) pushed Oshkosh's edge to five runs with a 2-run home run to left center.

The Titans added a run each in the fourth and fifth innings as well. Surane knocked Brenden Max (So. • Libertyville, Ill.) home on a double to left center in the fourth and Shiu doubled to right center in the fifth to score Taylor.

Stevens Point scored its only run of the first game on a solo home run in the top of the sixth.

Josh Jansen (So. • DeForest) relived Gaynor at the beginning of the eighth inning, allowing just one baserunner on a walk while he struck out one in his 2.0 innings pitched.

Kirchberg put Oshkosh on the board early in the nightcap, homering to right center to lead off the second inning.

In the third inning, the Pointers scored six runs for their first lead of the day. They homered on back-to-back pitches and hit an RBI single before a 3-run home run knocked Titan starter Nick Rector (Jr. • Sewell, N.J.) out of the game. Rector finished the game with 2.1 innings pitched and allowed six runs on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Parker Thompson (So. • Wauwatosa) then came in and finished the inning without allowing another run. He tossed the next 2.1 innings and struck out three batters while the Pointers added three more runs in the fifth inning on a stolen base, an RBI single and an RBI double to push the deficit to 9-1.

McNamara sent Max home on an unassisted groundout to first in the bottom half of the sixth, making the score 9-2.

After scoring on a single in the sixth inning and a double in the seventh off Alex Windey (Jr. • Wrightstown), Stevens Point registered four more in the eighth when Peter Conneen (Fr. • Fr. • Cary, Ill.) was pitching.

Oshkosh moved Shiu into scoring position in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn't get him home and the game ended after the inning with a 14-2 score.

The Titans will head on the road to face UW-La Crosse at Copeland Park for two pairs of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday (April 13-14). They will then wrap up the season series with Stevens Point on Wednesday, April 17 for another doubleheader in Oshkosh.
