Late Beaver Runs Down Titans

AUBURNDALE, Fla.- The UW-Oshkosh baseball team held a four-run lead headed into the bottom of the eighth inning in its game against Buena Vista University (Iowa) in Auburndale, Florida on Saturday (Mar. 9) before losing 11-10.

Nick Shiu (Jr. • Gurnee, Ill.) was Oshkosh's (4-4) best hitter on the day, going 4-of-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Connor Brinkman (Jr. • New London) earned the start for Oshkosh. He pitched 6.1 innings, striking out seven batters and walking none on the way, also giving up six runs on 12 hits.

Mason Kirchberg (Jr. • DeForest) and Shiu hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the second and give the Titans an early 2-0 lead.

Oshkosh expanded on the lead in the third inning. Shiu hit Jack McNamara (So. • LaGrange, Ill.) home with a bases-loaded single to center field. Carter Stebane (Jr. • Brillion) scored both Kirchberg and Zach Taylor (Sr. • Long Grove, Ill.) in the following at-bat.

The Beavers (9-3) scored their first runs of the game in the fourth inning on a two-run home run, a single and a fielder's choice. Another run was added to Buena Vista's total in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Logan Schill (Fr. • Pewaukee) put Oshkosh on the board for the first time since the third inning with an RBI single to left in the seventh that Braydon Skenandore (So. • De Pere) reached home on. Three batters later, Jake Surane (Sr. • Lincolnshire, Ill.) doubled to left field, which scored Jack McKellips (So. • Oshkosh).

A Beaver double pulled them within a run at 7-6 in the bottom half of the seventh. Brinkman was pulled after the run scored in favor of Alex Windey (Jr. • Wrightstown).

Shiu kicked off a three-run eighth inning, sending Taylor home on an RBI single to right. He scored the ninth Titan run himself on a wild pitch before Stebane did the same for the 10th.

After seven batters batted in the bottom of the eighth and the Beavers tied the game up at 10-10, Windey left the game and Josh Jansen (So. • DeForest) finished out the game, but not before he allowed the winning run to score on a sacrifice flyout to center.

Windey (0-1) was assigned the loss.

The Titans will play their final game of the Russmatt Baseball Invitational on Sunday (Mar. 10) against Salve Regina University (R.I.) (7-1). The game is scheduled to begin at 2:45 p.m. central time at the Lake Myrtle Complex.
