Scherrman, Waco Receive ABCA All-Region Nine First Team

GREENSBORO, N.C.- UW-Oshkosh shortstop Matt Scherrman and pitcher LJ Waco were voted to the 2023 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-Region Nine First Team on Tuesday.

Scherrman, a two-time All-WIAC First Team member, led the conference with five sacrifice flies and was second in hits (67), RBI (54) and doubles (17). The 2022 ABCA All-Region Nine member is a four-year starter for the Titans. He also led the team with a .427 batting average and .720 slugging percentage. The Wheaton, Ill. native's 5-5 batting performance against UW-Eau Claire on April 8 with 3 RBI was a career-best.

Earning his first ABCA All-Region nod, Waco struck out a league-leading 76 batters with a third-place earned run average of 2.21, a metric he led the WIAC in for much of the season. The Cary, Ill. native was also in the top-three in wins (six), home runs allowed (three), walks (13) and runs allowed (19). On March 11, he struck out a career-best 13 batters in a neutral site win over DePauw. He earned his first All-WIAC honor with a First Team placement at the close of the season.

Adam Cootway, from UW-Whitewater, was voted the Region Position Player of the Year and Drew Bryan, from the University of Chicago (Ill.), was voted the Region Pitcher of the Year.

Scherrman and Waco were two of four WIAC players named to the All-Region Nine First Team, joined by 10 on the Second and Third Teams.

UW-Oshkosh compiled a 25-15 (15-9 WIAC) record this season, finishing fourth in league standings. In the WIAC Tournament, the fourth-seeded Titans placed third, beating first-seeded UW-Stevens Point before falling to second- and third-seeded UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater.
