Titans Lose 10th-Inning Contest To Saints

Austin Colvard's two-out single in the top of the 10th inning provided the margin of victory as The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) baseball team defeated UW-Oshkosh, 3-2, on Friday (March 18) in Auburndale, Fla.

Chris Olson opened the 10th inning for the Saints (3-1) with a double and was replaced by pinch runner Haydn Lanoue. Following a strikeout and a fly out, Lanoue advanced to third base on a passed ball and scored on Colvard's third hit of the game.

UW-Oshkosh (0-5) sent the contest to extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pinch-hitter Zach Radde walked to open the frame and advanced to second base on Noah Polcyn's sacrifice bunt. Sam Schwenn then pinch ran for Radde and moved to third base on a wild pitch before scoring on Jack Paulson's sacrifice fly.

The Titans, who turned double plays in the first, third, sixth and seventh innings, took a 1-0 lead on Taylor Grimm's second-inning sacrifice fly.

The College of Scholastica grabbed a 2-1 advantage with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The Saints scored on a double by Riley Bernsdorf and a single by Trevor Bernsdorf in consecutive at-bats.

UW-Oshkosh threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning but left the bases loaded after fly outs by Jonathan Selchow and Polcyn.

Colvard and Trevor Bernsdorf tallied three hits for the Saints and Brian Minks two. The Titans received two of their six hits from Andy Brahier.

Joe Gonrowski earned the pitching victory for the Saints by allowing just one run in three hitless innings. Jake Turner replaced Gonrowski in the 10th inning and recorded his first save of the year by the retiring three of the four batters he faced.

Martin Alcoverde started on the mound for The College of St. Scholastica and pitched six innings with six hits and one run allowed. Alcoverde benefited from double plays turned by the Saints in the first and third innings.

Peter Jewell, who has allowed just three runs in 17.1 innings pitched this season, pitched into the ninth inning before being replaced by Colan Treml. Jewell scattered nine hits and yielded just two runs while striking out three batters and picking off a pair of base runners.

Treml (0-1) kept UW-Oshkosh in the game by retiring two Saints with a runner on third base in the ninth inning. The game-winning run Treml gave up in the 10th inning was his first allowed in 9.2 innings pitched this season.

UW-Oshkosh takes to the field against Endicott College (Mass.) on Saturday (March 19) in Auburndale.
