Yellowjackets Overcome Snow To Silence Titans
UW-Superior allowed one run in the last 13 innings to sweep the UW-Oshkosh baseball team, 8-5 and 6-1, on Sunday (April 21) at Tiedemann Field. The Titans are ranked 24th by D3baseball.com.
One day after giving up 41 runs, the UW-Superior (14-15/7-7 WIAC) pitching staff found its groove. In the opener, Travis Elwood tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief before Michael Doescher went 1.1 frames for the save.
Early in game one, the game was delayed 74 minutes because of blowing snow.
The Yellowjackets jumped to a 5-0 lead with the help of three Titan errors. Tom Fairbanks recorded a RBI single and Tyler Duex notched a two-run single to make it 4-0 in the second inning.
UW-Oshkosh (17-6/6-5 WIAC) stormed back to tie the score at 5. Michael Swift (So. • Kenosha) hit run-scoring singles in both the fourth and fifth frames.
UW-Superior pushed across a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh to take control. Robbie Veith and Sam Holden each accounted for a RBI single.
Dan Genrich earned the win, allowing five runs over five frames. UW-Oshkosh had Matt Wells (Sr. • Little Chute) take the loss with one ER over 1.1 innings.
In game two, Cody Johnson struck out nine for his complete-game victory. He allowed seven hits and a lone run in the fourth.
The Titans got their tally on an infield single by Robbie Kleman (Fr. • Oshkosh). UW-Oshkosh's comeback hopes were thwarted by a double play during the eighth and three straight strikeouts in the ninth.
UW-Superior put the game away with a four-run sixth inning. The first Yellowjacket scored on a hit batsman, while Holden followed with a two-run single to left. Wyatt Soderquist then singled to go ahead, 6-1.
Chad Wyss (Jr. • New Lisbon) started and allowed one run over 2.1 frames for UW-Oshkosh. James Lacy (Jr. • Shawano) completed the next 5.2 innings, yielding five ER on seven hits, for the loss.
Michael Polcyn (So. • Ripon) led the Titans with four hits on the day.
UW-Oshkosh has games scheduled at home against UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (April 24).
