Titans, Eagles Cap Season With Exciting Finishes

Matt Trocke totaled seven hits and one walk-off single to give UW-La Crosse a nightcap victory as the UW-Oshkosh baseball team split a doubleheader on Sunday (May 9) in La Crosse.

The Titans (18-20/11-13 WIAC) got a complete-game pitching performance and three hits at the plate from Kyle Kannenberg (Sr. • Oshkosh) to earn an 11-7 victory in the opener. UW-La Crosse (17-23/9-15 WIAC) tied the contest in the ninth inning and got Trocke's two-out single in the 10th to take a 9-8 decision in the finale.

Blake Berger (Jr. • Star Prairie) smacked a run-scoring single to put the Titans ahead in the first inning of game one. After Trocke nailed a two-run homer to take the lead during the bottom half, the Eagles made it 3-1 on a groundout in the fourth. Trocke added a run-scoring single in the sixth frame after Adam Cordova doubled home another tally.

UW-Oshkosh's surge included a pair of runs in the fifth, four in the seventh and three more during the eighth. Kannenberg accounted for an RBI single and a two-run bomb for the lead, while Derek Layton (Fr. • Cross Plains) plated one with a double and Mickey Fadness (Sr. • Eau Claire), Derek Hiroskey (Jr. • Kimberly) and Lucas Wirth (Sr. • Omro) each got a man home with singles.

Kannenberg fired nine innings and allowed six earned runs while striking out two. The Eagles' loss belonged to Garrett Scray after he surrendered eight runs in 6.2 frames. Tim Verthein recorded the final seven outs, yielding three runs and marking four strikeouts.

UW-Oshkosh gained a 15-14 advantage in the hit column thanks to three hits and three runs scored by Hiroskey. Trocke totaled three hits and three RBI as Corey Geary topped all batters with four hits in the contest.

There were 12 runs during the first two innings of the nightcap, including five in the first. The Titans got one on a Hiroskey double, but it was a two-bagger from Mickey Fadness that made it a 3-0 lead. UW-La Crosse's response in the bottom half included a leadoff homer by Cordova.

Hiroskey posted an RBI single to cap UW-Oshkosh's three-run second frame. Earlier, Nolan Fadness (Jr. • Eau Claire) drove in one with a double down the right-field line and Kannenberg posted a run-scoring single. UW-La Crosse tied the game at 6 when it marked on an error and singles by Jay Fanta and Lance Poppy.

Fanta continued to do damage with a solo home run in the seventh frame. After the Titans went on top with Mickey Fadness' two-run single during the eighth, Poppy sent the game to an extra frame with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

Troy Mrkvicka (So. • Greendale), who earned a complete-game win yesterday, took the loss after allowing three earned runs in eight innings. Matt Wells (Fr. • Little Chute) surrendered six runs (two earned) over the first 1.2 frames for the Titans.

UW-La Crosse starter Steve Henes was charged with six runs during the game's first four outs. Zach Lauersdorf then entered and tossed the last 8.2 innings, picking up the win and striking out six while yielding two runs.

The Eagles won for the third time in their last 24 games with UW-Oshkosh, which dropped its ninth one-run game of the year. Trocke paced the victors with four hits. The visitors got another three-hit game from Hiroskey and four RBI by Mickey Fadness.
