WIAC Selects Thompson As Track & Field Athlete Of The Week

The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference picked UW-Oshkosh senor Sydney Thompson as one of its two Kwik Trip Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week award winners for meets held March 29-April 4.

Thompson, the league's top field performer of the week, won two events while recording this season's best NCAA Division III outdoor performance in the shot put at the UW-Whitewater Rex Foster Men's Track & Field Twilight Invitational held April 2.

Thompson finished first in both the hammer throw and shot put and third in the discus during a meet which involved participants from Milwaukee School of Engineering, UW-Platteville, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Whitewater and Wheaton College (Ill.) in addition to UW-Oshkosh.

Thompson defeated 31 other contestants in the shot put with her NCAA Division III-leading measurement of 45-4 1/2. UW-Oshkosh's Morgan Florek finished second in the event with a distance of 43-10.

In the hammer throw, Thompson ousted 25 other challengers with a mark of 165-4 that ranks seventh in the country. The Titans also had Florek finish second in the event with a cast of 157-5.

Thompson finished third in the discus with a cast of 134-5. UW-Oshkosh's Florek won the event with a measurement of 141-11.

Team scores were not tabulated for the meet.

Savannah Rygiewicz of UW-La Crosse was named the WIAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week.
